- kim buay pSingapore, Singapore13,011 contributionsPretty free waterfallsWe alighted at bus stop 37 for this Falls. There were lots of autumn foliage to be seen here. There are also a number of food stalls here. We walked up the stairs for an even better view of the Falls. At the top, one can cross the road to continue the trail to Senjogahara marshlands( highly recommended) or take a bus from bus stop 38 to either Yunoko Lake ( bus stop 45), Yudaki Falls ( bus stop 44) or Chuzenji Lake ( bus stop 29, 28, 27 or 26). There are many shops and restaurants at Chuzenji Lake.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 October 2023

There was one viewing area near a gift shop and refreshment stand. And then there were stairs up to a different part of the falls. At the time, it was a little icy but well worth the walk up. The natural beauty of Japan is wonderful to see and hear.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 May 2024
- TassieTravellers99Launceston, Australia3,407 contributionsOne of our favourite waterfallsAt the western end of Lake Chuzenji you will find these wonderful falls. They are a short and easy walk from the carpark. They were the highest of the falls we saw on our Japan trip and in total they dropped 110m. The name meant dragons head and we could see the effect as two streams of water poured down around a rock that imitated the two pronged beard of a dragon. It really was a closer and much more dramatic site that Kegon waterfall. There is a path that follows the cascading river and we followed this some way and got more and more views of the winding river and rapids. The shape of the river was perhaps the dragons’ tail. You can follow the path for a couple of kilometres. There is also a second carpark further up the road that can save you some walking.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2024

We walked from Odashirogahara moor trail all the way down to Ryuzu Waterfall. The walk from the Moor to the Waterfall in winter was quite spectacular in the snow and when we went in February was manageable with hiking boots and poles. The track is well marked.

Ryuzu Waterfall is beautiful, but it was not a time for maple season. If maple leaves turned red or orange colors that would be fun. We visited there too early in October to see fully red maple leaves on mountains. Just a few maples have turned red and yellow.
Natural wonders are always amazing. We love traveling to places with waterfall and maple leaves. This time my family and I went to Nikko, Japan in autumn. Nikko's maple leaves will be beautiful by the end of October. I think I want to go back again next year then we might see colorful maple leaves.

I recently visited both Yutaki and Ryuzu waterfalls all in one day using Tobu Nikko 2 days bus pass. I was awed by the stunning views of nature beauty that combined with elements of water and vibrant colors of autumn foliage. Ryuzu Falls a.k.a Dragon Head Falls is on the Tobu Nikko bus route direction to Yumoto Onsen, During the month of October, many visitors-foreigners and Japanese as well-flood to the UNESCO city of Nikko. The popularity of colorful foliage attract thousands of hikers, nature lovers and quite a few very serious amateur photographers who didn't mind to carry along their bulky and expensive camera equipment, The best time to view the autumn foliage colors in Nikko National Parks is between early Oct. and the end of Oct. The best way for foreign visitors to enjoy the autumn beauty and save money is by Tobu's bus passes. There are other routes for the bus passes offered, so, just take the one that suit your interests and schedules. I had two full days in Nikko, so two days pass for the bus routes between Nikko Station and Yumoto Onsen for 3000 yens was my take. This two-days pass allows you unlimited rides on the routes designated on its bus mapping areas; mainly focusing on the popular attractions and onsens(hot springs). October is a peak month for autumn foliage viewing; so, expect to wait at long queued line that take you along several popular attractions. These passes are sold at Tobu Nikko Station, where several bus routes(by alphabets followed by numbers) of stops are stationed outside of it, but these buses actually begin at JR Nikko Station, so, when buses arrive Tobu Nikko station, likely many seats have been taken, especially on the nice days or weekends. Since JR Nikko station and Tobu Nikko station is only about 300 meters apart, so, the tip is: take a 5 min. walk to catch your bus at JR Nikko Station, that way you have better chances of secure your seating. I suggest you take the early bus since there will be many more people come at the later time. The walk from the Ryuzu no taki # 35 bus stop to the falls is about 5 min. You will need to go through the middle pathway between the restaurant and souvenir shop to the observatory deck. The viewing area is a small and narrow deck built as an extension from the restaurant and shop. It is very difficult to take personal photos without people get in your way. So, don't count on taking them with the frames that you really like to see, but rather I suggest you focus your shootings on the beauty of the nature environment. There is another good location to take pictures of the falls: a small bridge below the restaurant, next to the set of staircase to the restaurant. From the bridge You can view second small waterfalls which run off from the first basin to the lower creek. For those who want to view the entire waterfalls from the beginning of the run off can start from the top of the falls. To start from there you must get off Yumoto Onsen direction bus stop # 36, one stop after the Ryuzu no taki (stop # 35). Once get off the bus you will see a large sign post on the top of concrete steps with Ryuzu falls information. You will then take wide concrete block steps that built alongside the cascading water. Like a large spool of silky ribbons, waterfalls gently flow down over the surface of cascaded rocks. Ryuzu falls is less dramatic than the Yutaki falls in terms of dynamic energy since the body water flows through different degrees of rocky slopes before it hits the bottom basin. Nonetheless, the vibrant changes of the foliage colors near the basin accompanied quite well with silky threads of the waterfalls. When waterfalls hit the large rocks at one point closed to the basin, currents split two ways and runs off separately to the bottom of the basin, creating two small falls. In fact, the pictures I took on the Ryuzu falls harmonically reflecting the nature's beauty at its best. It seemed to me there were more people visited here than did at Yutaki, a bit of touristy as I saw it. However, I admired the scenery as much I did at Yutaki.

We came here on the 25th of October, full autumn colours were in swing at Ryuzu. If you take the bus it is only a few minutes walk to the waterfall, behind the restaurant next the waterfall there is a small pathway that would be easy to miss. Go up this and there are further beautiful sights of the waterfall, I think perhaps more beautiful then the bottom waterfall.
When we got off the bus we accidentally went the wrong way and found ourselves amidst beautiful autumn foliage, some of the nicest we've seen in Japan. Would recommend you exploring the area around this waterfall a little, especially if there in Autumn, overall a nice day out with beautiful sights.

People who names these natural sights usually take a lot of artistic licensing when naming it after animals or items. This time is different. It actually looks like a dragon. There is a small hiking path beside the waterfall where you can look at the dragon's beard, the nose and the head. The whole hike takes less than 30 minutes and is quite pleasant and easy to walk. There is also some canteens in its vicinity. Must visit if you are in the area.

Beautiful waterfall with amazing views.
You can visit: Tosho-gu; Kegon Falls and Ryuzu Waterfall in the same day and have spare time.
For this to work I suggest:
-Start at 9:00AM from Nikko station
-Take bus form Nikko station to Ryuzu Waterfall
-Walk the stairs up to Ryuzu Bridge (fall will be in your right)
-Take bus from Ryuzu Bridge to Kegon Falls
-Take elevator to visit Kegon Falls (amazing views)
-Form Kegon Falls take bus to Tosho-gu.
-Arrive at Tosho-gu at max 12:30PM.
-At the end you can walk form Tosho-gu to Nikko Station to see the city. Also stop at Sakaeya to buy traditional Age Yuba Manju.
You can do it backwards, but remember Kegon Falls will close at 4:30PM. On the other hand Tosho-gu will close at 5PM.

Ryuzu falls are probably the second most accessible of Nikko's waterfalls after Kegon Falls.
However, as they are on the far side of Lake Chuzenji, the atmosphere is more pleasant and less touristy (although there is still a crowded shop and restsurant there).
Although not as breathtaking as Kegon in stature, Ryuzu's twin falls a quite pretty. The easy accessibility (take the bus headed for Yumoto Onsen and get off at the Ryuzu Falls bus stop) is a bonus.

This waterfall is quite far away from the rest, it's best to come here using All Nikko pass. it's not a big waterfall as well, so the viewing can be done is a short time. However, if you have the time, follow a hiking trail from here, it will be a more worthy experience.

When did you visit the falls? Was it early October or late October? I am considering going in 2 days, but it looks like probably the falls won't be red and "autumny" as it is at it's best.
