At this time of the year, it is cold and windy so dress appropriately. Arrived Nikko at 1140am and took the 25 min walk up the street of shops to the red Shinkyo bridge. Most shops were closed and street pretty deserted. Bridge looks ordinary but coupled with the flowing waters and hills in the distance, it makes a pretty... More

These are the expensive places to visit of Japan. There was a lot of restoration work going on so we did not see the entrance gates. Lots and lots of steps so if you have trouble walking up steps this is not the place to visit. I'm glad we saw it but I feel there are other places in Japan... More

A wonderful complex. Amazing combination of art, craft tradition. Unbelievable richness of the entire place. Try to be there early morning when they just open the site so the place is not so crowded. Any description I will try to post is dull relative to the sights, the rich craftsmanship and decoration. A must see place. On the top we... More

Visit this world heritage shrine on your stop to Nikko. Entrance fee 1300¥ per adult. It is a great walk and the architecture is breathtaking (see pictures)

The beauty of this collection of buildings cannot be overstated in my opinion. The intricate detail of the ornamentation and the colour is truly stunning. We had seen a number of shrines and temples all across Honshu prior to Toshogu, and it was not diminished at all by being at the end of the list.

As others have said restoration is ongoing, but there is still much to see. This is a beautiful site and despite being very popular with visitors it is well worth visiting. The colours, carvings and decoration on the buildings is exceptional. You can walk up the 200 steps to the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the founder of... More

Some parts of the shrine are covered with scaffolding but not too much. We walked form the JR station along the high street and up into the national park where this is situated amongst the trees. The three wise monkeys carving is back and there is enough uncovered. Much is highly decorated and there are lots of steps to see everywhere.... More

We arrived right at opening and were happy we did. We were able to explore the shrines before the huge crowds arrived. My husband and I each bought a English audio guide (which was unfortunately, only available an hour after opening) which was great as the signs were all in Japanese and we didn't know a lot about the history....
