I was guessing to see only small animals such as rabbits and monkeys, since the zoo was located in a section of a park used by citizens and was free of charge. However, I was betrayed in a good way. There are so many different kinds of animals in the zoo that it is hard to believe it is free. As you would expect, there is no space where you can directly touch the animals, and since the zoo only displays animals, there are no mechanisms to allow you to closely observe their lives, but even so, small children will be excited to be able to observe the various kinds of animals.
Despite the fact that there is no staff on duty at all times, the zoo is very clean and the typical zoo smell is not too strong. All of the pathways in the zoo are sloped, making it easy for visitors with disabilities to use the zoo.

This is a very small and free Zoo located in the large Omiya Park. There are a range of animals and interestingly a Japanese Bear and a Hyena next to each other. We have been a few times with our kids, we normally take a picnic as the Zoo is in a large and nice park with a large play ground and lots of space to spread out under trees. I would not recommend thinking of Omiya Park Zoo as an attraction in itself, more one of many things to do while at Omiya Park. The Zoo is free and our kids are yet to get sick of having a quick walk around it.

Part of the grounds surrounding Hikawa shrine, don't expect a massive corporate zoo. This is a quaint, FREE zoo that's been here for a very long time and includes many Japanese animals too like bears and monkeys. Well worth 10-15 mins on your way through to the shrine.

I dislike any caging of animals - especially when the allocated space and habitat is so small - can/should not be called a zoo.
The number of animals on display are very limited - making one feel as if the place was created as a afterthought ... and then forgotten.
Walk through in under 10 minutes.
