【万平公園】に《旧熊谷堤》が200m程度残り 《旧熊谷堤》から生き残る老木の桜を鑑賞出来ると知り 【熊谷桜堤】と合わせて 妻と伴に訪問しました。訪問したのが 3月28日だった為 【熊谷桜堤】と同様《ｿﾒｲﾖｼﾉ》は未だ1～2分咲きでしたが [熊谷南ﾛｰﾀﾘｸﾗﾌﾞ]による[千年桜《しだれ桜》]では 見頃の木がありました（添付 写真参照）。この《しだれ桜》は 《ｿﾒｲﾖｼﾉ》の推定寿命が60～70年程度に対し 寿命が数百年と長く 千年にも渡って咲き続けて欲しいとの願いを込めて 植樹されたそうです。又 【万平公園】北西部・《旧熊谷堤（高さ：3m程度）》上に 熊谷の誕生・発展に寄与した[竹井澹如（たんじょ）]の碑（添付 写真参照）がありますので歴史ﾌｧﾝの方に見逃さない事お薦めします、【万平公園】の万平と言う名前は彼の愛称に由来し、【星渓園】は彼の元別邸なので。

この公園には桜並木のある土手があり、この土手は日本の桜三大名所の一つで、昭和2年に名勝熊谷堤として史跡天然記念物に指定されていた土手の一部だそうです。昭和33年に都市整備の関係で大部分が取り壊され、天然記念物の指定解除となったとのことです。とても歴史的価値のある公園で、公園内には歴史を物語る記念碑が所々にありました。この土手は熊谷駅の反対側の石上寺の方に繋がっていたそうで、今では考えられません。この公園の桜を見て、とても歴史を感じることができました。

ＪＲ熊谷駅南口から徒歩で。桜の季節には熊谷桜堤に行く前に必ず寄りましょう。
桜の季節ではないときに行ったのですが公園内には色々な桜の並木道が設置されていて桜の季節には色々な桜が鑑賞できる場所になるだろうと推察しました。また、公園内は生糸の産地からのモニュメントも設置。桜の季節が楽しみ。

熊谷市の中心部にある公園です。遊具も多く、児童公園というカテゴリーだと思います。観光地として観に行くような場所ではありません。

広くはないが、大きくもない、子ども遊び場としては、最高のロケイション。園内には 昔の旧熊谷堤が 土手の一部がそのままに保存している公園です。桜の時期に是非一度。
