The railway isn't the most fastest form of transportation in Hakone, but it does give you some great views and the switchbacks are an interesting experience. It can get crowded though (and I was there during the low season!) and sometimes, the train level and...More

The Tozan railway is a cute little tram-like train that will wind it's way up the Hakone mountain region. It can produce some breathtaking views, however at the peak of the tourist season can get very busy. The train is very small and slow, if...More

Only a train map in hand, you can go anywhere around Japan. There is a very nice sushi restaurant nearby the train station, must try, so delicious by very traditional Japanese!!

its transportation, the slow way. Nice for someone with a lot of time, not very practical. The train is slow getting to the stops, slow at the stops and makes several intermediate stops to change tracks.

Nothing too exciting here, it's basically a monorail that takes you from the Hakone Ropeway to Gora station (or vice versa). Can get crowded during busy hours.

We travelled to Hakone from Tokyo. You can't use your JR Pass with these lines, and we also didn't know about the Hakone Pass, which would have saved us loads of money. The journey isn't easy, so I would recommend leaving your bog suitcases/backpacks in...More

The Hakone Tozan railway is a mountain railway starting at Hakone Yumoto and ending in Gora. Along the way the train switches direction three times as it moves along the side of the hill slope to gain height in the tight space, hence the switchback...More

An engineering feat and a fun little railway. Super~efficient, and lots of fun. The signage is quite amusing.
