Lovely historical pottery and ceramics. Not big but thoughtful, well displayed pieces. The big surprise is the exquisite garden surrounding it. The moss garden especially.

We hadn't planned to visit this but were on the cable car passing by and when they announced it we thought we would pop in to take a look. From our point of view it was worth it just to walk through the gardens alone. Everything was just turning autumnal and looked lovely

Some very interesting pottery pieces from Japan, Korea and Pakistan, and although the trees were still green, the garden was also a delight. If you have a moss problem in your lawn back home, then think again, just say to the neighbours you have a Japanese theme going on!

I chose to visit this place instead of the Hakone Open-Air Art Museum, pretty much on a whim. Their collection is nice enough, with artifacts from a wide range of Japanese history and a few other Asian cultures. Most memorable in my mind were the giant, human-sized jars. It is a fine collection, if low-key compared to other museums in Hakone. But what sets this place apart is its landscape garden, included with admission. When we visited in May, the mossy grounds and canopy of leaves made for a paradise of green. I'm sure autumn foliage season there would also be beautiful. One half of this garden is open only on weekends and holidays, a rule which I was unaware of, but thankfully I came over on a Saturday, so I was able to see the place in all its beauty.

This is a wonderful place to visit if you love Japanese maples, mosses and pines, also you can enjoy a tea ceremony while looking out to the gardens,It also has small waterfalls, Looking up at the hills you see the volcanic steam from the mountains.

紅葉の時期になったので訪問してみました。現在は紅葉がすすんでいる時期でしばらくは楽しめそうです。
It was time for autumn leaves so I tried visiting. It seems that it will be fun for a while at the time when autumn leaves are currently in progress.

平日にもかかわらず入場券の購入は5分程度並びました。また、駐車場は美術館前の駐車場は満車でしたが臨時駐車場は十分空きがあり待たずに入る事が出来ました。
Despite weekdays I purchased admission tickets for about 5 minutes. Also, although the parking lot in the parking lot in front of the museum was full, the temporary parking lot was sufficiently empty and it was possible to enter without waiting.

広い庭ではありませんが十分楽しめました。
Although it is not a large garden, I could enjoy it enough.

It was a horrible, rainy day so we put off doing the round course and looked for indoor attractions. Am I glad we decided to venture into the garden during a slow down in the rain. The moss gardens had a magical light that was so inviting. I would love to see them with fall color. Really beautiful

For many people, the attraction here will largely lie in the exceptionally beautiful gardens. Part of them consist of a shady moss-covered area and part of a more formal display of Japanese shrubs and trees. The whole thing amounts to what I think is the best small garden I have ever visited in Japan. We were there on an overcast day in late May, but I would imagine it would be gorgeous whatever time you visit - autumn especially of course.

The museum itself provides a relatively small exhibition of Japanese artefacts that will likely only turn on an expert or aficionado of historically important porcelain and ceramics. For the layman, not much of stunning beauty or interest.

Free parking is available across the street, and you can get a discounted joint ticket for the museum/grounds plus Gora Park nearby (also worth a visit)

I agree with many of the previous reviews that the pottery collection is average (the displays are a bit dated) but that it is worth the visit for the moss gardens.

This is not a large museum, having 5 rooms of historical pottery from across time and countries. There are some gems here - the Jamon period pots, particularly.
It won't take long to tour the building but the garden is worth a visit too. Moss laden and dense with maples, it is in the classic Japanese style and is quite beautiful.
