We didn't realize what we were getting ourselves into when we began walking into the park in the pouring rain!! It was quite challenging going up and down all the steps and not falling! But it was fun! LOTS of steps!

If you want to combine a visit to Lake Ashi with a little, easy hike on the lakeside then Onshi Hakone Park is your place to be. It is a serene and not to strenuous hike, maybe even walk, that I can also recommend to elderly visitors of the city. If the weather is fortitudinous you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji and even if not the remains of traditional fishing villages and the calm nature will have been worth your time anyways.

We arrived to Hakone by ferry and decided to walk to Moto Hakone. This park was between and offers nice view to the lake. There are several paths and one take you down to the lake and then back up. Good exercise, if you like.

This lovely park is worth a visit even if it's too misty to see Mt Fuji. The woodland walk around the whole area was so beautiful and we really enjoyed our time there. There are lots of spots for picnics en route but be sure to clean up after yourselves so more people can enjoy it after!

We walked up to the top of the park and visited the house that used to be the Royal family's holiday resort. The way up was nice and cool in June.

The building that used the Royal holiday venue had a mini exhibition of the place showing the original blueprint of the resort.

One is actually able to see Mt Fuji on a clear day. The place to see it is even marked out for tourist/visitors to stand to get the best view. In the upper level of the building, it would be the best spot to see Mt Fuji if it is a clear day.

Should go to the top of the park. Highly recommended!

If you ask the car park attendant and show him your disability badge he will give your driver a special pass allowing your minibus to be taken to the Imperial Palace building. The traditional garden is mainly wheelchair accessible with views over Lake Ashi to Fuji. (If you’re lucky!)
The place is also accessible with an interesting history. Not too touristy either.

It is a short 10 min walk from the south shore cruise terminal of Lake Ashi (Stop #1) and the garden itself is very pretty. It has an impressive building housing a museum on the ground floor and a cafe above. We had good tea and coffee with cookies here. There are excellent viewing spots along the many windows of the cafe to look at Mt Fuji. Due to overcast skies, Mt Fuji didn't appear.

We stopped at this park on one of the ports of the sightseeing cruise of lake Ashi. This park has a few different trails to follow and is bigger than I thought, when looking at a map!

We walked the waterfront trail, which I will warn is a little rocky and rough/uneven at points. Do not take this trail if you have bad knees or unsure footing, and do not attempt if you have a cane or a stroller or anything like that.
Lovely forest and lake views from this trail though.

As one of our first site-seeing destinations using the Hakone free pass, Onshi Hakone Park was emblematic of the beauty and tranquility of Japan. The gardens and woods alone are worth a visit, but the views from the park of Lake Ashi, Mt. Fuji and the surrounding hills are stunning. The Hakone free pass is symbolic of the peerless public transport and infrastructure that we encountered in Japan. From the shuttle bus between the Hakone- Yumoto train station and Lake Ashi, to the site-seeing cruise on a pseudo-pirate ship across the lake (with views of Mt. Fuji on a clear day), the Hakone ropeway (gondola) to the otherworldly sulfur-infused atmosphere of Owakudani, the cable car to Gora where we visited the beautiful gardens, another bus to the Hakone Open-Air Museum and then the cog railway back to Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone free pass allowed us to take in more in a single day than we would have thought possible. (TripAdvisor should include the Hakone free pass as an attraction.)

This was the palace gardens of the previous dinner residence of the imperial family. Immaculately maintained, picturesque vignettes that are Instagram worthy, and on a clear day you can see Mt Fuji. What's not to love? Admission is free.
