“Free community zoo”

It's near the Yachigawara(?) onsen and I stopped by here after my bath. Try not to go during winter as many of animals would be kept in the shelter. They've got a reptiles, birds, ponies,etc.

“Beautiful and historic park”

Hakodate Park is on the hillside of Mt. Hakodate and an easy walk from the ropeway's base. The terrain is hilly and affords a varied landscape with a couple of bridges and nice views. There are several colonial historic buildings there. Ludwig Haber's gravestone is there, having been moved from the Foreigner's Cemetary to the place where he was murdered by an ultra- nationalist. The park is also the site of a number of fairs and festivals throughout the year and is largely undiscovered by the hordes visiting the mountain observation area.

Small Zoo is impressive

We went to this place on 8th April. It was a weekday and there were hardly anyone in the park. It has a compact mini Zoo & it was well maintained. The Hakodate rope car & observatory which is a few blocks ahead is a must see. I recommend tourists who are not in a group to rent a car in Hakodate. You'll save a lot of time as the local transport is not all that great.

Good to visit early in the morning

I visited this park, which is located to the left of the Gokoku Jinja Shrine, and on the same road (Higurashi Dori) as the Hachimangusai Shrine.There were quite a few persons jogging and walking in the park when I visited.I was really interested in seeing the Ludwig Haber monument which was in the south western corner of the park, behind the Hakodate Museum.

Ludwig Haber was the German consul in 1874. He was at the post in Hakodate for only 7 months when he was murdered by a samurai, Tazaki Hidechika. The samurai was anti-foreigner, and his beliefs were in line with the Japan policy of isolation, until 1869 when the samurai shogonate was overthrown by the government forces during the meiji restoration i.e. return of the emperor to the throne. Tazaki had come to Hakodate specifically with the intention to kill foreigners. Tazaki turned himself into the authorities, and he was charged with murder, and executed shortly thereafter.

On the 50th anniversary of the incident, the grave marker was removed from the cemetery and erected at the spot of the incident in Hakodate Park. The imperial troops removed it during World War 2, but it was found nearby shortly after the war ended, and re-erected in 1949. After viewing the memorial, I walked around the park and enjoyed the gardens, ponds and other monuments.

The easiest method of reaching the park is by Tram # 2. The park is almost at the end of the tram line, and the nearest tram stop is the next to last on the line, Aoyagicho. The park may be visited along with the many shrines and temples within walking distance of the park.

Nice place to see cherry blossom if you don't like crowded places

Small nice park to take a stroll. We were there end April 2017 to see cherry blossom on the first day we reach Hakodate. I believe it will be more crowded once its at the full bloom stage. Many stores were set up in the park selling food and drinks when we were there. Good place to hang out a while if you are in Hakodate to view cherry blossom yet want to wait to visit Goryokaku when its fully bloomed.

Diff type of cherry trees

Hakodate Park is less packed than Goryokaku in early May due to its cherry trees are spread out. Free of charge and good for a walk. Don't expect too magnificent view.

Nothing in winter

The entire park was covered in snow and we found a pavilion to climb up to get a view of the park but it is very small and nothing like the magnificent spread of Goryokaku Koen on a similar day. There was nothing much to see due to the new content snow blanket.

Easily accessible by tram or stroll

We took a tram to the nearest stop Aoyagicho Station. From there is a brief walk to the park. We were lucky that we caught the full bloom of cherry blossoms. Its a relaxing place and we saw many people picnic and enjoying the cherry blossoms. There is also a carnival to celebrate the blooms. Worth a visit if there is cherry blossoms. We had a relaxing walk to the red brick warehouse. There were directions/ signs along the way which was great.

Nice and compact

The cherry trees were just budding when we arrived. Perhaps in about a week to ten days it would be best for viewing. Nevertheless this is still a nice and compact park to stroll around.

As pretty and cozy as you can get !

At the foot of Mt Hakodate is this cozy park which has enough cherry blossom trees, which in early May, bloom in wonderful beauty in contrast to the coniferous green trees growing up the mountain. Then again the yellow and red autumn leaves in late October blaze with magnificient glory, their colors made more vibrant by the contrasting sea breeze temperatures . Oh yes ,chidren will love the tea cup merry go round and feeding the deer in the mini zoo, or the peacocks.
