I stopped in to adjust my time while waiting for the bus, and it was surprisingly fun for only 100 yen. I learned a lot from the explanations of various fishing methods. The old videos were good, and the simulated experience of a boat rocking in the North Pacific was interesting. It's near Goryokaku.

This is a quirky little museum near Goryokaku Park, setting out the history of the Hakodate fishing industry. There’s not a lot of English information, it the staff are very eager to help and explain the exhibits. The highlight is definitely the simulator which shows you what it is like to be on the bridge of a trawler pitching at sea. Those of a sensitive disposition should definitely try to avoid the 5 minute film (accompanied by very jaunty music) of a whale hunting expedition. Look out for the trousers lined with cat fur...
