Even though we were a week late to see the peak of the cherry blossoms there were still some in bloom. It is a beautiful large park to take a walk in even when the 6000 cherry trees aren’t in bloom.

The park was quite huge but it was an amazing trip for us. It was magically and beautifully covered in light pink by the cherry trees when we were there in late April. Gorgeous view to the tower and park of the city could be seen from the park as well.

The most historical monument in Hakodate pre-dating the Meiji Restoration. It is a Vauban-style pentagon-shaped fortress symbolic of the Tokugawa Shogunate's efforts to modernise after the Perry Expedition.

We visited during winter so the only attraction is the Magistrate's Office (which is certainly worth visiting). There's lots of slippery, melted snow on the castle walls so it's not so easy to trek. Might be better to visit during spring.

We loved our time walking around this lovely area.
Great to learn the history of the place and see what remains of the old fort where history was made .
If in town you have to visit .

Goryokaku Fort or park is a National special historic site in Hakodate. I went for the cherry blossoms because they are in full bloom this time of year. Several other attractions there like the observation tower and temple. But if your Following Sakura this is where to be at the end of April.

I enjoyed the visit here. Not crowded for my visit. Interesting history and English information. I’d love to go back for Sakura.

桜の季節はとてもいいと思います!
歴史についてわかりやすくまとめてあり、あまりわかってない人でも楽しめるかと思います。

I think the cherry blossom season is very good!
The history is organized in an easy-to-understand manner, and I think even people who do not understand much can enjoy it.

One of the best freebies in the city. Definitely one for those who are historically minded like me. Walking around you almost feel the history happening around you. A great deal of information available for those that wish to really get in to it. Not much in the way of interest for young children, nor are refreshment shops available.

We wandered around the park looked at the stone work, read the signs about the old fort etc. It was chilly, but a nice visit. We did not pay to go up into the tower.
