Even though the weather was cold and damp, the short drive to the lake is well worth the effort. The Visitors’ Center is fascinating, with plenty of English translations for the exhibits. The views, when the sun came out, were spectacular and show just how volcanic activity in Hokkaido has influenced life here. The maples were blood red in their fall foliage.

We booked online with the Chuo Bus Sightseeing co. This turned out to be our best snow sculpture photo expedition. With the extreme cold, I wouldn't recommend doind a self-drive nor independent public bus transfers - too risky!

Just check out the images everywhere to compare with Sapporo's Odori Park, Asahikawa's Tokiwa Park & you'll realise each one is unique but the best is Shikotsu's imho...

My husband and I stayed in Shikotsuko Jyozankei Daiichi hotel on 23 April 2016. It was within 15 minute walking distance to the Lake Shikotsu. The scenary of the lake was stunning and we enjoyed a lot walking in the park along the lake. We didn't have time to join any boat trips but walking at sunset there was equally enjoyable. The weather was good when we visited the lake and we were able to see the snow mountains on the far side. In the park you could choose to walk up to the hill top and walk in the woods, or to walk to the far end to the beach. We took both routes before dinner time and it was great. There were a few souvenir shops in front of the lake where you could get some snacks (e.g. corn, ice-cream). All in all this is one of my favourite locations in Hokkaido and I would definitely recommend one to come visit this beautiful Lake Shikotsu.

Accessibilty: you can take the public bus at the New Chitose Airport (station no. 28) to Lake Shikotsu. It takes about an hour to travel from the airport to the lake and it costs about ¥1,030 per person. The bus also stops at JR Minami-Chitose station where the Outlet Rera was within walking distance. The trip to-and-from JR Minami-Chitose station to the lake costs about ¥1,000.

The lake is a caldera lake, which was formed from collapses in the earth after volcanic activity.
Visitors can rent boats, bicycles or scuba gear to enjoy the natural surroundings. Sightseeing cruises of the lake are offered in glass bottomed boats and in speed boats from mid April to
early November.
Lake Shikotsuko is encircled by mountains, one of which is Mount Tarumae. Tarumae ranks among Japan's most active volcanoes and most recently erupted in 1981. The mountain can be climbed in a steep but short ascent in less than an hour and offers impressive views of the deserted crater landscape and over Lake Shikotsuko. It is also possible to circle the crater in about two hours, but due to poisonous gases it is not allowed to enter the crater. The trailhead is difficult to access without a rental car.

A serene place to be. We wanted a lake scenery , quiet place for a retreat. Due to distance, we were deciding between lake Shikotsu and lake Toya due to the distance. We were glad we decided in Lake Toya. The view is beautiful but the best of this place is that it gives out a serene and quiet charm we wanted for a relaxing end to our holiday. A good wrap up for us.

I would highly recommend everyone to visit Lake Toya and Lake Shikotsu for amazing sceneries, beautiful and peaceful lakes. I did some online research and found it quite hard to visit Lake Toya and Lake Shikotsu using public transport, therefore I decided to purchase an one day bus tour. (I am not suppose to elaborate further or this post will not be publish, so just google it - one day tour - Lake Shikotsu)

Tour starts early morning, around 8.20am in Sapporo and then proceed to Lake Shikotsu (lovely cruise), Hokkaido Kinoko Kingdom (sells mushroom, but we love the local food sold here. Its like a big foodcourt). After that we went to Lake Toya and then Usue Ropeway - another amazing place that I love. Another amazing view of Lake Toya and active volcanoes. Beautiful and amazing. After that, we proceed to Sairo Observation point for another beautiful view of Lake Toya.

Highly recommended!

early July-2014

We went there after a golf trip in Chitose area. We rented a car and headed back to Chitose Airport, took about an hour.

After picking up rented car from Chitose Airport, we took the chance to pass by Mt Tarumae on our way to the lake. Took about 40 minutes.

The lake has 2 stop areas - one which you'll arrive first, that has fun activites - boat rowing, glass-bottom boat ride..... but parking per entry charge of Yen400- is required. The one area is about another 15+ minutes' drive further. It has picnic area, toilet facility, fishing trips, shops n stalls selling potato on stick, fish on stick, ramen and other light snacks. Parking is free here. Great if you can't spare too much time by the lake.

We took the underwater boat trip which allowed us to see the fishes and volcano at the bottom of the sea. The view there was really breathtaking and the air was really fresh too!
