Really a group of ancient buildings half hidden in the woods. Lots to see - including a giant carved turtle which, if you touch its head, guarantees you a long life. The areas around the temple buildings are pretty unkempt which adds to the relaxed, informal atmosphere. However the main garden area at the entrance could certainly do with quite a lot of tidying up. I'm afraid that for the elderly many of the buildings are unreachable - broken, slippery staircases, no handrails etc.

Worth a little detour. The building is quite small but there's a wonderful garden to it. All along the touristbus line, so you just have to get off to enjoy the quiet and the shrines.

This temple has one of the oldest teahouses in Matsue. The historic teahouse is off to the side of the main temple which you see upon entry (we had to ask to see it). The main temple serves tea which we enjoyed while looking at the garden. The walkways through the garden and grave sites is not kept up very well, so it was not as enjoyable as it could be. We did see the hydrangeas which are spectacular in June. There is an exceptionally beautiful Buddha at one of the altars near the back of the main temple. This temple was originally Zen but is now Jodo.
