A collection of Edo and Meiji sites in one place

Aug 2012

Convenience is a major factor here, as well as atmosphere. Easy access to places associated with the Edo era (Matsue Castle, Samurai Residence (Buke Yashiki), Meimei-an tea house, History Museum and Horan-enya Memorial Hall), Lafcadio Hearn (Memorial Hall and former residence), or local classic culture (places to get tea, soba, gifts, or the Tanabe art museum). Easy access on the Lake Line bus, and lots of discounts available with foreign passport.

Nice Street to Walk.

This street, situated around the castle, has lots of interesting stores selling souvenirs. Among them, I would like to recommend tourists to go to the stores which has a souvenirs with jewels and rabbit-shaped souvenirs, which are actually very cute and memorable.
Besides, since it is situated around the castle which has a fascinating view, you can also enjoy the nice view there. I strongly recommend tourists to go the castle as well as this street, and both have nice view for sure.

Worth seeing

This street lies to the north-east of Matsue Castle and goes along its moat, with old samurai houses and Lafcadio Hearn's house. There are a couple of bridges leading to the castle park, enjoy a nice walk thru a little bamboo and pine forest

Lovely street beside the castle moat

Sept 2019

This street runs along the castle moat on the north side of Matsue-jo (if you are coming from the castle take the Inari-bashi bridge near the Jyozan Inari shrine) and apart from the preserved former samurai homes (Including Buke Yashiki) and other buildings on the north side of the street, there are also beautiful old pines propped out over the water. It was a lovely place to walk around whilst waiting for the bus.

Shimmy Nawate Street is a street full of amazing old homes and places to visit. It is a must of you are on your way to, or coming from, Matsue Castle.
