Would've been perfect if not for the crane cages

I was upset to see cranes in cages, but that was the only thing I disliked about Okayama. Just entering the gardens I saw a sign pointing to Kakumei-kan Hall, a building not ordinarily open to the public, so I went to check it out before walking around. I thought it might be an old residence like the ones in... More

We visited the garden in the early afternoon. It was very crowded to watch the flying of the white cranes on the New Year day. We arrived on time and see the flying white cranes. It was considered very lucky and have good luck for 2017.

Catch the tram from the station or a bus and they both will drop you at the gates of this magnificent garden. The water meanders its way through garden beds, tea plantations, lakes, cherry and plum orchards. There are a couple of tea stalls where you can sit quietly or you can picnic on the lawns with your own food.... More

400 yen to get in this paradise is really nothing. The garden, made in 1700, was meant for daimyon in the Edo/Takagawa period. Amazing, with the houses, cherry trees and plums, rice cultivation and many beautiful spots. Clean, silent, beautiful. It is right in front of the castle of Okayama.

Even in November Korakuen Garden is lovely! The paths are well-maintained and the plants and trees are beautiful. You may even be fortunate enough to see a young couple in traditional dress posing for their wedding photos!

The first time we visited was 16 years ago during cherry blossom season. It was beautiful as one would imagine. This time, 16 years later, we came in December when most flowers were gone, and trees bare. We did not expect much. But were we surprised! The place was just so stunning - even without flowers and cherry blossoms. Each... More

Ah, those Autumn colours! Wonderful garden! Okayama might not be on top of your list of places to visit in Japan, but if you happen to come to this friendly city, go and have a walk through Korakuen Garden!

These gardens adjacent to Okyama Castle are very attractive. There are well defined walkways right through the gardens and round the perimeter to some ruins of the dock which once served river traffic to the castle. The gardens are beautifully maintained and there are a variety of plantings from forested areas to formal gardens around water features. Several areas have... More

After viewing the castle we walked over to the adjoining Korakuen Gardens. The gardens are beautiful and as dusk descended, lights lit up over the garden creating another dimension in beauty. We had a break at the teahouse before exploring the rest of the garden.
