Located within the Bikan Historical Quarters of Kurashiki. This art museum was founded in 1930 and showcases famous paintings from the West, including El Greco, Gauguin, Monet, etc. There are traditional Japanese buildings within the premises that are used as art galleries that also house sculptures and pottery.

Recently, whenever I travel, I often visit art museums in those places. This time, I got a JAL dynamic package and the admission fee was 500 yen instead of the usual 2,000 yen, so I got it without hesitation. I'm a complete amateur when it comes to art, but looking at beautiful things moves me. Also, it's hard to find a quiet environment, so it's good for calming the mind.
Thank you very much.

Most of the paintings and vases can only be viewed through glass. If they suspect customers are up to no good, there's no need to show them; they can just keep them hidden in the storehouse.
Looking through glass is far from true appreciation, and it seems stingy and annoying.

Perhaps to make customers come back multiple times, only a portion of the collection can be viewed, which seems stingy and annoying.

I paid 2,000 yen and it was just an unpleasant experience.

Founded by Kurashiki businessman Ohara Magosaburo, this is Japan's first private Western art museum. It displays many famous Western masterpieces, including works by famous artists El Greco, Claude Monet, Renoir, and Gauguin. I'm glad I had the opportunity to stop by when I was in Kurashiki.

The first time I came to this museum I got quite a shock. Hanging on the walls was a Modigliani, a number of Picasso’s, a few Monet and a heck of a lot more. It was so unexpected in this smallish town a couple of hours out of Osaka. At that time, I was in a rush and didn’t have time to explore further. Yesterday I came back and was blown away once again. As well as some extraordinary contemporary European and Japanese artists, the museum also houses an Asian Art Gallery that includes numerous stone pieces, mostly from China from around 500 AD. They are simply stunning.
It costs Yen1300 per person ($13-$14)
Kurashiki is a strange place. It’s obviously very touristy – but it somehow works. The Ohara Museum of Art is the icing on the cake.

Although this isn't a typical Japanese Art museum, it's very well done and contains some excellent art - well curated and in a gorgeous setting.
Once inside, you can follow the suggested trail using the guided tour by headphones or just wander to things that interest you most. There is an annex in a separate building with modern Japanese art which is not to be missed.
However the main attraction for me was an amazing Japanese garden at the back of the building in which you can walk in. It's exquisite! Don't miss it.

A lot has already been said about this place and all good. I call it a place as it is collection of buildings which in themselves are an attraction and the gardens hold the Japanese beauty of small but complex as with each step across a stepping stone you get a different perspective of plants and pond. And of course there is the art itself an interesting cross section of Europe, Japan Contemporary and Ancient Chinese. The Japanese pottery is one of the best selections I have seen in one small room. I am amazed at the subtle aesthetics of use of glaze, colour and shapes. Some only have a simple black brush stroke and yet convey simplistic beauty. I would pay the fee just to see that one room as it seems to behold so many styles of Japanese pottery and each style is represented in my opinion, by the best. You will never want to have just a plain symmetrically square or round bowl ever after seeing these selections.

If you happen to be in Kurashiki, what itself has a nice old area called Bikan to wander around, definitely visit the Ohara museum. The founder of the museum Ohara hired the professional artist Kojima to collect distinguished pieces of Western art in the early XX century. Kojima traveled to Europe twice and also to Egypt, Korea and China. El Greco, Modigliani, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse are represented, modern and contemporary art, Asian and Western antiquities. The collection is of high quality and breadth. Audio guide is well worth to add to the ticket price. You would need around 2 hrs to explore the whole museum, including Kojima's memoriall hall some 5 mins away.

Worth visiting Kurashiki city only for this museum. You will surely be surprised by paintings of major artists, such as Cezanne,Corot, El Greco,Millet, and so on.On the other hand 、lithograph and pottery of major Japanese artists are also excellent.I dare say this place is the best private museum in Japan.Better than any other in Tokyo.
