The main exhibition is about Yayoi Kusuma art which is very vibrant. But here are also small galleries about less known artists. - Nelia K5 contributionsSuperb!Amazing, I love Yayoi Kusama and dreaming to get one of those LV YK collab bag, she's a genius! Go to Nagano-ken, to Matsumoto and see the genius' work. The food there is amazing, the sorrounding area is teeming with activities and would to go again and again and I've been there several times. Visit the hot-spring to rest your tired body.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 January 2024
- IanUnited Kingdom31 contributionsMust-visit in Matsumoto! This is a fabulous museum. We loved the large and diverse Kusama exhibition, as well as the calligraphy and other collections. The gift shop was also great. Tickets are very reasonably priced and staff are extremely friendly. It was extremely quiet during our visit on a weekday afternoon. We would highly recommend a visit to anyone coming to Matsumoto.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2024

If you are an art lover and especially a fan of Yayoi Kusama, this museum showcased her art mind from the moment before you step into the compound and throughout the museum.
Unfortunately there's no photography allowed inside the museum.
Yayoi Kusama's art displays are on the 3rd floor. You could walk up the grand staircase or take the lift.
Oh, one more thing, you are not allowed to bring your bag into the gallery, to prevent vandalism and probably accidental damage to the artworks. There's a locker for you to keep your staff though. No worry.
The first artwork of Yayoi Kusama is the the great pumpkin. It was a magnificent piece of sculpture.
Apart from her polkadotsy artworks, you'll get to see her other intricate works. If you look close enough, you'll see how she painted herself into her works.
There are also amateurs artworks on the 2nd & 3rd floor galleries as well. There are some really great works on display including sculpture.
Take your time enjoying these great work of arts.
If you don't mind walking, its about 10 to 15mims walk from Matsumoto Station.

The museum features Yayoi Kusuma’s permanent art works in her hometown.
Born in Matsumoto, Yayoi Kusama spent many years in New York and is internationally known for her vivid and colourful works.
A great place to spend time and wonder at her pieces of art.

I visited this museum because I heard that Yayoi Kusama's works are permanently on display here. There is a Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo, but it is expensive and only requires a timed online reservation. It's not friendly to the elderly, so I came here first thing in the morning and was able to appreciate the works at my leisure. Moreover, the admission fee is 410 yen and parking is free! Thank you, Matsumoto City. I'll come again.

I went to this Museum on my own during a few-day stay in Matsumoto with hiking friends.
I can only recommend it!
I mostly wanted to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition which I truly loved, but I also had a look at the other collection exhibitions and they were worth a visit too.
I didn't bother going to the temporary exhibition of metalworks by Katori Hotsuma but I regret it.
My friends who saw it, recommend that too!
If you find yourself in Matsumoto with some spare time or maybe bad weather and you want a break from hiking, I recommend a trip to this great museum! 👍

There is also an object by Yayoi Kusama on display at the entrance, and it is crowded with many tourists.
Inside, there is a permanent exhibition area, a shop, a cafe, etc., so you can spend some time there.
It is located about a 15-minute walk from Matsumoto Station, making it a convenient location for sightseeing.

It is within walking distance from JR Matsumoto Station. It would be a shame to leave just with the object in front of the entrance. The third floor is Kusama's permanent exhibition.
There are not many works, but they are all wonderful. It was my first time to see an exhibition using mirrors. The light from a single chandelier continues endlessly, and it is fantastic and wonderful... You can enjoy the world of Kusama to the fullest, with the endless ladder to heaven and the large pumpkin object.
Also, her writings printed all over the wall are very moving.

I'm sure Yayoi Kusama fans will scold me, but as an outsider, I can't help but think that they're trying to stand out in a bad way.
If this were the Yayoi Kusama Museum, it would be fine. No matter how much of a local artist she is, I think the name Matsumoto City Museum of Art is a bit of a stretch, but I guess it's none of my business as an outsider.
I had to chuckle wryly when I saw that even the trash cans were polka dots.
If they were going to be so thorough, I would have wanted polka dot canned coffee or juice.
Of course, I apologize for only enjoying the outside tour.
I have no intention of disparaging Yayoi Kusama or the city of Matsumoto.
If they were going to celebrate Yayoi Kusama's achievements, I wish they had found a different way.
As I've said many times before, it's none of my business as an outsider.

Is YaYOI KUSUMA exhibition will still be presented on 13.9?
Written 8 August 2018
No it ended the 22.08.2018 in Matsumoto City Museum of art. HOWEVER, there is another special exhibition in the YAYOI KUSAMA MUSEUM in Tokyo until 31.09.2018 ("Here, Now, I Have Reached the Grandest Start of My Life")

Is YaYOI KUSUMA exhibition will still be presented on 13.9?
Written 8 August 2018
Sorry about my belated response. I have just checked the museum's website. Kusama exhibition titled All About My Love ended on July 22, 2018.
Written 16 August 2018
Can you take photos at all of the yayoi kasuma flowers? I see some pictures on instagram. Also how much is the entrance fee?
Written 9 October 2015
They limit photography within the exhibit to just one large room where about 40 of her square canvases are shown. The entrance fee is ¥1200, well worth it.
