This Japanese castle is absolutely worth a visit. It’s one of a very few castles from the samurai era that were not destroyed by war or fire. The 400 year old construction is impressive to see. There are exhibits of samurai weapons and items in...More

The history, the building and the views are great and clearly for a tourist it is a must do experience for the majority of us, however we waited 40 minutes to gain entrance to the castle. You have to remove and carry your shoes, you...More

An impressively constructed castle, although a little bit difficult to access due to steep narrow staircase, particularly the top two floors. Good display of ancient firearms on the middle floors. Some great external photo opportunities including photos with ninjas, samurai and others at no extra...More

This castle is visually very impressive and as the oldest existing castle in Japan, I think is well worth a visit. Lots of stairs to climb so not for those with mobility problems. We also enjoyed coming back at night to see the castle all...More

Went at night, was gorgeous. And well lit too and totally safe. Though, going in the day with more light to see everything clearly might be a better idea

Great 5 story castle with progressively steeper stairs between floors. Quite good natural ventilation supplemented with fans where needed. You carry your own shoes in provided plastic bags which must generate a lot of waste. Is a must do but recommend a degree of fitness...More

Approaching the castle took our breaths away. Grand in its beauty, must see if in Nagano area. We happen to visit at dusk and were lucky to experience both, it’s day and night beauty.

Rain, rain, rain, but not for long; it did finally stop long enough to enjoy the Matsumoto Castle. The castle is really beautiful from the outside. The inside leaves a bit to be desired, though it shows amazing structural designs and construction. The views from...More

It would be hard to visit Matsumoto without a visit to the national treasure that is the castle. Unlike many in Japan, it is the original structure and is very impressive and photogenic. Numbers in the main tower are restricted so we had to sit...More

We arrived at 16:15 and the last opening is at 16:30 so we were rushed all the way up and then all the way down the steep stairs. And we were shouted at very rudely if we tried to take a picture without flash anywhere....More

I don’t know to be honest. We bought a 7-day Japan Rail pass to use throughout our trip because it was less expensive and very convenient. We bought that before we left and then picked up the vouchers/tickets at the airport... More

It will take you longer than one day from Tokyo to Matsumoto castle. When you get there you don't need a guide for the castle. You would be better to take an organised tour of Japan that includes the castle. Or if you want... More

We got our tickets at the gate. I was there in Mid November and the castle was not full. Since you need to take your shoes off before entering the castle, make sure you have warm socks. The wooden floor can be cold.
