I went with my daughter and our friend's who live near Matsumoto to experience this excellent preserved piece of Japanese feudal history. We learned a lot, both from the exhibits and from our friend's who have been living there for a while. We enjoyed meeting...More

Matsumoto castle is one of only 12 original castle keeps left in Japan. As if that isn't rare enough the castle is also the only black original castle keep left, the black crow castle. The grounds and castle are really stunning, and what is great...More

Picturisque. If you are fit, do climb up to the top. The steps are steep though. Its about USD5 for entrance fee if Im not mistaken. Lovely scenic views. Beautiful.

Matsumoto castle is a wonder to behold. During our trip to Japan, I found it as the most interesting castle as well as the photogenic one as well. It is one of the few surviving wooden castles in Japan and is also called the Crow...More

The castle is situated in town so makes it easy to get to. You can walk around the outside to get some great photos and then head inside to see the original old castle. Great views from the top. Extremely well kept inside. No furniture...More

I had to give the castle mixed reviews because it was and wasn't what I thought it would be. It wasn't what I thought it would be in the sense that when you go to other castles like in Osaka or Kanazawa the castle is...More

Loved the city, and the castle is not to be missed. Make sure when touring castles you wear non-slip socks, as the floors are slippery, and the stairs to the look-out is VERY steep. You will have to take off your shoes at every castle,...More

Unlike the other castles you've seen in Japan, this is not a replica. It's the real deal from ~1596. The castle plus our meals in town made the brief stop in Matsumoto, on our way to Kamikochi, worthwhile.

I'm not too sure if you are still looking at this or not, but instead of giving you the right route to go with, I thought I just mention the time you will possibly spend at Matsumoto Castle and Snow Monkeys. I spent a day... More
