About
Since the 17th century, Nakamachi Street prospered as the main business district of Matsumoto’s castle town where wholesalers sold goods such as sake and kimono. It was located on the old Zenkoji Kaido, a route connecting Zenkoji Temple to Nagoya and Kyoto. Many of the historical buildings in Nakamachi are old storehouses, some being over 100 years old. Nakamachi now has a variety of shops including folk art and craft shops, restaurants, and cafes. You will also find the Kurassic-kan, which was once a sake brewery building, and the Scale Museum, which is housed in a former scale shop. Sticker campaign service has started 2018. You can get original stickers when you go to Nakamachi Street after visiting Matsumoto Castle. Free Wi-Fi is available since 2019.

If you are ever in Matsumoto, Japan and have an hour or so to spare, head to Nakamachi Cafe on Nakamachi Street.

Order their pancake soufflé. Bitter chocolate. You must. Moist and fluffy….They were so good my toes are curling thinking about them. Two can share the pancake and feel satisfied after. Get coffee too – their house blend, hand dripped, was pretty good. You won’t regret it.

Let's face it: Matsumoto has other places competing for the same target. The few nice "corners of excellence" does not offer enough attactiveness. There should be much more of the same in Nakamachi and also along the river, then Matsumoto will become a world attraction instead of a luke-warm tea as it is now.

This is a better option if you are looking for some shopping, cafes and historical buildings. A good street to walk and explore with a lot to see. It gives a glimpse of life back then.

The 2 walking street recommended by the tourist staff were worth the effort, one Nawate st ran along side the river the other Nakamchi st one street way and parallel. Both provided local souvenirs local food and a view of what this area looked like in the past. Not far from them is the Genchi Well which is still in use today to provide clean spring water in the city of Matsumoto.

I can't recommend a trip to Matsumoto highly enough. It was very enjoyable. We traveled here from Hakuba which looked a little daunting from the train schedule but in the end was very easy, just long. The wonderful people at the train station handed us a pre-printed schedule showing all the trains from Hakuba to Matsumoto and return in English. This included when we had to change trains as well as which platform the train came in on and which the one we wanted to change to left from. So wonderfully organised.

Make sure you head straight to the Tourist info office at the train station and get the Matsumoto Walking Guide. It is the best handout I've ever seen from a tourist office. It shows you what the specialties of the town are and what the kanji is you are looking for as well as outlining the tourist attractions. The free map is also great. I was well impressed with this office.

This street had galleries and restaurants along it but they were quite pricey so not quite the shopping experience I was looking for but still a lovely stroll. All the shop keepers were very welcoming. Nawate street was more picturesque and the price point I was looking for but as it is only one block over from Nakamachi street, the two combine wonderfully for a stroll after lunch.

We went for an evening stroll on friday night. Some restaurants were open, but not to busy. All shops were closed and the street was quiest. It seems the hub of Friday night fun is around Matsumoto station - lots of laughter and good food.

I think it’s quite a hipster street. It has lots of pottery and crafts that are beautiful! It’s not the typical kind of cultural street but you will find interesting buys there. A nice place to visit!

We did not walk through the whole street, it was quiet and had its unique charm. One would feel relax by simply stroll along.
