    Not worth it :-(
It was sort of interesting but the guide was only in Japanese. The English guide was a booklet of no more than a dozen lines per item whilst the Japanese explanation went on for some time for each item, despite the cost being the same for both Japanese & English tours. If I knew then what I know now I probably wouldn’t bother.

Worth a visit - even for non-native speakers
Since we couldn't call in advance, we decided to head to the Temple and see if any spots were still available on some tour. Lucky for us we could join a tour 10 minutes later. As we don't speak any Japanese, they handed us a booklet in English and our guide made sure to always tell us which page to read at a certain spot (although it's very clear thanks to the pictures next to the text). The written text seemed to correspond exactly to what the guide was telling in Japanese so it didn't feel like we were missing out. The tour lasts about 40min. The visit itself was very interesting and fun. Certainly worth a visit.

Quirky house - worth a nose around
It’s clear from the get go that this tour is ONLY in Japanese. The staff were very friendly, made sure we had the right English guidebook and I didn’t feel I really missed out. The house is very quirky and it was fun to poke around it. It’s shoes off and we did have to sit on the floor for the intro. I didn’t mind - it kind of added to the experience. We came as a couple. I’m not sure I’d bring (young) kids - they may not get so much out of it. But that part of town is interesting to mooch around so I’d give it a whirl if you’re up for something quirky.

    Booby trap house
We arrived at the temple without reservation, there is a intercom to the left, you ring the bell and they check if you can join, we had to wait 10 min before we could join a guided tour. It is important to mention children are not allowed. There is an entrance fee of 1200 yen, which you pay when you enter the house. The tour is in japanese only and the non native speakers get a binder to follow the tour in english, this is self explaining and it works, No photo taking is allowed i assume to keep the pace in the tour, The tour is informative and the way the house is build with all the booby traps is impressive. The tour takes approximately 30 min., once you are in there is no way out. The location has nothing to do with ninja it is just called that due to the setup of the house.

I telephoned to make a reservation, yet the person who answered the phone was very unhelpful and unobliging. Rather than discuss when tours were available all she wanted to know is whether I had ID and how long I had stayed in Japan. I had to hang up because the whole experience was very frustrating. What a waste of time and what a disappointment!

This place is so strange. I was told they only allow phone reservation, so i asked the hotel to help but got a shock to know that when the hotel called them, they wanted to speak to me directly ! Luckily i was near the front desk.

Abit of waiting when we wanted to go in as they said they couldnt find our reservation. They asked us to wait one side while they settled the group of 6 infront of us. There wasnt anymore people coming in as it was past the tour time and the last timing. The group had to wait for the staff to "clear us" to start the tour. We waited for another 5mins or so and finally they asked us to make payment. In total, only 10 paxs, The group before us were more than 15. I wonder why they didnt allow us from the start.

The tour was ok but they are very mindful of what we do, the minute we touched something even if its by accident, they told us 'no touching', some steps are without hand rail, we cannot even hold the side for support. Even if there is one that looks like a handrail, they didnt allow us. All in all, very disciplined place. :)

Much last the last review, I attempted to make a reservation as requested on their website (open 4 weeks in advance) and was told only accepting reservations 3 days prior. Also the lady proceeded to ask me multiple questions about my ID/Visa, and when was my arrival into this country. If this phone conversation is reflective of the type of tour and welcome that I will receive here, it is most definitely not worth the visit. Very disappointed in the customer service which is very surprising for Japan.

You need a reservation to go inside, and it is worth planning ahead. You will be told that the tour is given only in Japanese. Have no fear! If you can read English then you will be fine. They offer a makeshift guide book that is effectively a translation of the highlights that your guide will point out. Ingenious. The secret doors and traps are so interesting. A cleverly designed building that has nothing to to with ninjas by the way.

My hotel helped me book a tour in advance. Yes it's a bit disappointing that they don't do an english tour but the printed book they hand out in exchange provides enough info. It's fun seeing all the secret rooms and trap doors.

If you have kids triple check what age they have to be to get in. We have an official brochure from the Kanazawa Tourist assn stating the ages allowed, it was booked by our hotel who told them our kids ages but when we arrived they said no to our youngest. Needless to say what a waste of time and effort. They need to get the facts straight.

This is a highly recommended attraction by many people including the locals at Kanazawa. Thus, I was drawn to it and was determined to visit the place despite my busy sightseeing schedule. Unfortunately, once I arrived at the location, I was sorely disappointed that I cancelled the tour.

Here is what happened to me. Firstly, I had read in some official Kanazawa tour guide booklet that was given to me by the tourist info center that the temple does offer English guided tour if make reservation in advance. Turned out reservation is a MUST and ALL tour guides are in Japanese ONLY. Even though they will provide you with an English guided map, visitors are still required to listen in and follow the Japanese tour guide regardless. Once the tour begins, you are required to keep silence at all times. Even if you were to have brought someone who understands Japanese and could translate on their behalf, that is not allowable. I find such requirements unacceptable because for an admission of 800yen, which is considered expensive as most museums' fees range from 100yen to 500yen, I expect better tour services. I don't mind following a self-guided tour guide in English but to require me to waste 40 minutes stuck listening to Japanese guided tour, no talking at all times, and still not be allowed to freely roam around with a self-guided map -to me is a real kill of joy.

Due to the above reasons, I feel this attraction is designed and catered specifically for locals and Japanese speakers only. I do not recommend non-Japanese speakers unless you have a lot of time to kill, don't mind listening to straight Japanese talk for 40 minutes, and/or a big fan of ninja. Otherwise, it is better to save money to buy yourself a decent lunch or on other exciting attractions beside this temple.
