As a morning market in Takayama, Miyagawa Morning Market is famous and is crowded with people even at 6am.
There is also a morning market in front of Jinya, but it is smaller in scale than Miyagawa Morning Market.
It was a bit unclear whether it was for locals or tourists.
Therefore, it is undeniable that it lacked excitement even though it was the peak tourist season.

Looking at the photos posted by other people, it was autumn 2023, when the COVID-19 pandemic had subsided, but the number of shops set up did not seem to have returned to pre-COVID levels.

This market happens every morning alongside the river bank. There are various stalls selling fresh produce, takeaway food, coffee, souvenirs. It's not huge but a big enough market to spend an hour or so there.

A short walk across the iconic Nakabashi bridge. It’s a very small market largely selling local produce; fruits, vegetables, preserved vegetables and a few handicraft items. Very friendly locals! Though the market won’t be for those who are planning to get their your breakfast snack fix there!
Walk down to Miyagawa morning market for breakfast snacks instead!

We visited on a wet day. It was just beginning to rain. There are a few stalls selling fruit and vegetables but nothing out of the ordinary. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it but would suggest looking at it in passing if you are nearby

If you have ever seen an apple or a broccoli or a tomato, there is no need to visit the Jinya Mae morning marker. Said market consists of a few stands of fruit and vegetable sellers. A Bronx cheer to whoever it was that thought of adding this "market"
to the list of things to see in Takayama.

Or we could look at it in a fresh and different way: if the Jinya Mae market is a legitimate entry to the list of places to visit/things to see, then we should add to that list the local 7-11 store, a far more fascinating place.

Definitely not recommended

There are two morning markets in Takayama don't get confused by reviews for the other Hida-Takayama Miyagawa Morning Market. We visited Jinya-Mae Morning Market because of its close proximity to our hotel and convenient walk..Similar to other reviews, the day we visited the market, there were hardly any stalls open. We had expected the market to have more stalls & buzzing with activity. Instead, there were a handful of stalls selling produce, miso and apples. It was somewhat interesting though to experience a outdoor market with local vendors selling local products which are unique to Takayama.

Comparing this with Miyagawa Morning market this is smaller in scale. Lesser stalls and mostly selling peaches (could be due to seasonal) and miso paste.

We always enjoy markets, and despite the pouring rain, visited the market to view goods on sale. Everything was very fresh and the mostly women sellers were friendly. We noticed that the famed Sarubobo, a cute, faceless, Japanese Amulet was the same price in the market as in the shops everywhere in Takayama.

We visited just before the New Year so the majority of the stalls were selling New Years mochi and decorations. It was interesting, but we found the Miyagawa Morning Market offered a wider variety of items for sale.
