Such a beautiful traditional place. We loved it here walking through history.when you enter the shops, take time to admire the history hiding behind the souvenirs..

This is a really pretty street with lots of restaurants and places serving street food, souvenirs and sake. The architecture is beautiful with lots of wooden houses with unique designs but it is so touristy and a bit of a tourist trap - the price of everything was really expensive compared to places a few streets away. We did do some sake tasting in one of the shops which was fun to do.
This attraction is worth seeing but it gets so busy as hordes of tourists on buses get dropped off here to stop off and have lunch, and we found the more quieter times for visiting as we were staying nearby was early in the morning when shops were closed and later in the afternoon.

I really enjoyed visiting his street I went to this street a few times once early in the morning before anything was open and it’s really pretty and very quiet. Then during the day we went and tried a little miso soup and went into one of the sake breweries. These are indicated often by the balls hanging up outside. We paid 450 yen and for that you got a little sake cup and could sample once twelve different types of sake. The one I went in had a little seated area and you got to keep your cup.
There are lots of little food vendors on the street and I recommend trying the beef skewers and the beef and potato hash. You pay at a machine and get a little receipt which you had in. The food comes very quickly. We also tried the puffs filled with different flavours . They have five flavours my husbands vegetarian so we asked not to have the sausage and then he went back and got another give cheese ones they were soo good.
We only really brought food and drink there are lots of shops but we had already picked up some craft things at the the morning market stalls.
It’s pretty touristy but definitely worth a visit.

I love Japan. But I hate Takayama. Is one of those highly recommend picturesque town with the promise of old Japan. If you are a tourist with little travel experience and love tourist traps, you will be happy here. This place should be rename as souvenir town. 99% of the this town are souvenir shop. Every cafe here are aim at tourist with cute cakes and bad coffee. The famous street where the old building line up, is tourist shops after shops after shops. You can walk it in 20 mins. Imagine flying across the world and taking hours of train to be here. Japan is great with amazing food and onsen and culture and arts. But avoid Takayama. Trust me.

The historic districts in Takayama are beautiful and well worth seeing. I was in Takayama for about two days and found myself here many times. There were many shops and restaurants open. In the late evening and early morning, there was hardly anyone here, so photos turned out great. It can get crowded around noon, I could only image how busy it gets here during tourist season. Visit Takayama now while you can!

I enjoyed walking through and looking at the cool architecture. Unfortunately most museums were closed due to covid. Most shops and restaurants are still open.

Great neighborhood - very traditional and lot of history. Couple of Sakae breweries are there and great place to taste various types. Some of the food sold are expensive but understandable given the location

Walking along the street was like going back to the edo period with traditional style merchant shop houses lined the streets. These buildings are very well maintained. Each shop is nicely decorated. There are lots of restaurants, tea houses, souvenirs shops and small eateries along the streets. Very nice place to walk around and stuff your stomach with the local snacks.

This is my third visit to Takayama and I'm still loving the town's historic atmosphere. The streets are lined with old wooden buildings which are transformed into shophouses selling food and various Japan crafts so it feels very fascinating to roam through the charming lanes.
The streets are always filled with tourists and long queues can be seen for the hida beef sushi which is a signature of Takayama. I've tried Gohei-mochi, a miso-glazed ricecake on a skewer that is exclusive to the region. Taste is savory and you can still feel the texture of the rice which is very unique. A great place to visit if you like the feel of old Japan.

When we were at Takayama-Shi, first thing that impressed us to go is Sanmachi Suji which just located within a short walking distance from our staying place and can easily find the place. It was not crowded when we were there on a weekday and it was so nice to walking thru the old streets that has many stores and restaurants too. But, we need to be alert that majority of the stores and restaurants will close early at around 5-6pm local time during winter. However, we get to shop for some souvenirs, buy food and sake inside the Sake Brewery shop. One thing we also noticed is that everywhere we can find red doll called Sarubobo means Lucky Monkey Baby that comes with a story behind and believe as lucky charm. We like this place and went back the next day.

Hello, I arrive in Nagano Airport on 12 Nov. Technically I have 6 nights from 12 Nov. I will like to cover Shiragawa-go; Takayama and Kiso Valley(Magome and Narai) for 6 nights before going back to Nagoya. Can anyone advise how many nights I should stay in each place please ? thank you so much!

Sounds like a fun trip. Since you are going mid-November, there is a pretty good chance you will encounter snow; so need to keep that in mind. Shirakawago-go is worth half to 3/4 of a day, no more. Assume you'd make this your first visit after arriving in Nagano, so you arrive late afternoon and stay the night. Next is Takayama, which is worth at least a day and a half visit.....probably two nights. Apart from the old streets and Morning Market, make sure to stroll the "temple walk" North of the city center and visit the float exhibition hall. Remember.....snow. Can't help from there.

Hello, we will be visiting the weekend of Oct. 10-11. We know it is the Fall festival but I would like to try sake. Are the sake breweries open on the weekends? I am also trying to understand if I should contact them beforehand but am a little confused as to how to get information...thank you in adcance!

This is basically a tourist district. There are a couple of stores offering sake for a minimal price. If you would like to visit the brewering process, that might not open in weekend.

I read that on weekdays some of the shops are not open. Does this mean i should not visit sanmachi suji on a weekday? If not, what other activities can one do on a weekday in takayama, aside from visit Shirakawago? :) we like sampling local eats and my husband would like to try some of the area's famous sake. thank you!

hi.
i was there on a weekday -- all shops were open (however they start closing at 5pm). and yes there are a some sake breweries/shops where you can try all the different sakes (for very little money) and then buy your favourite.
the hida village is reported to be a must-see; i did not have time to make it, so i cannot tell.
my favourite visit in Takayama was Takayama Jinya, a museum of Japan's best preserved local government and public services' building from the Shogun times.
