I was there at Hirayunomori Onsen during Winter and the Waterfall is just a 100m away from the Onsen. We visited the waterfall and it is beautiful. The water fall was almost frozen and you see blue and white on the fall it self. the experience is amazing especially when we drink icy orange volka near the fall with the snow. you should really try it.

We also went to a small Ramen eatery around the waterfall area and it serve one of the best Ramen. it is delicious and cost effective, only about 700yen a bowl.

look at the picture I have attached and go try it yourself :)

We walked the trail in a downpour, but the gentle climb and increasing roar of the water made it all worthwhile. Worth the detour!

Although the waterfall isn’t advertised very prominently in the village nor did it feature in our travel guidebook we found it to be a very nice and impressive sight. With its 60-odd meters of falling water in a jungle-like surrounding it is most picturesque.

Hirayu Otaki was one of the sights on route to Shin Hodaka area.
We stopped by here in early Dec and was glad we did!
There's a big car park right beside the entrance building/shop.

The weather was super cold and most of the walkway were frozen.
Thankfully there was a small shuttle bus from the main entrance to bring you right to the waterfall area so we do not need to walk in the freezing cold.
We had to pay 100 yen for a one way trip which took less than 5 mins. (trust me its worth it) The driver offered to wait for us as we were the only ones there viewing the fall.

we had to walk pass a frozen bridge...bypass an almost frozen stream/river, the rocks and trees were all covered and sprinkled with snow.. what a sight!
at the end of it we can hear the majestics water flowing of the Hirayu Otaki. We were lucky to still be able to see it flowing amidst the cold, frozen environment...

we had to be very careful while walking along the path to the fall as it was frozen and some parts were slippery so if you are coming with kids or old folks please be careful during winter time...

after sometime enjoying the view of the fall all to ourselves we headed back to the shuttle bus. The good old driver was waiting for us outside the fall area and were we glad to take the shuttle bus back to the main entrance.
There is also a small shop at the entrance that sells the usual souvenir stuff and local specialty of Takayama.

If I have a chance, I will come back again to visit in other seasons.

We hiked up to the fall from the town, but it is easily accessible by car, too, with a several hundred meter walk up from the car park. The fall is quite impressive, in a beautiful natural setting.

Short walk to the falls, went early in the morning so there were few tourists there. Good photo spot and some attractive autumn leaves in late October.
