    Morning market walk with breakfast
We went there twice. First around 7am+ and the second time later around 8am+. More shops were opened and we saw and ate more as we walked along the 300m stretch of pop up stalls and shops.

Wonderful local market that offered a good feel and taste of local lifestyle and foods!
We were visiting Takayama Old Town as part of our day trip and stopped by here enroute there. It was almost 10.30am when we arrived and the morning/farmers markets were almost going to close (usually around 11am-12pm) but we managed to shop there. We saw some stall holders doing their packing while some were still running their businesses. (but you could also buy from the shophouses too instead of the makeshift stalls) It's a good place to visit as the makeshift market stalls were located next to the river canal and they were mainly selling their own produces like rice, fruits, veggies, pickles with some local arts and crafts. Prices here were relatively cheap and reasonable and the stallholders were very friendly though they speak no English. You could try the samples before buying and the stallowners were generous in serving too. We managed to buy quite a good number of local produces. They were nice and cheap! Great to visit here and do allocate sufficient time (i.e. coming earlier) so that you can shop fully, stretching about 200-300m!

    Great little market.
Lovely market where I bought lots of reasonably priced gifts. Pleasant surroundings, it's a nice walk along the river where you can see carp and herons. Also some interesting sculptures around. There are lot of nice shops beside the market too.

We have stayed overnight in Hida plaza Hotel Takayama & travelled 30 mins to here on a Sunday morning. About 9am so as to catch the activities!
Takayama morning market is one of the biggest morning markets in Japan. Here there are 2 locations: One is held in front of the Takayama Jinya, and the other at the Miyagawa River side. We visited the latter. Coach parged at the 高山別院 照蓮寺 area and the tour gp walked about 20 mins here, the beginning.
We begin the Miyagawa market from Kaji bashi and walked across some sixty shops-stalls close to 400 m to Yayoi Bridge, with the Miyagawa River just beside. Both the (makeshift) Stalls/stands at the riverbank side and the established shops sell local crafts, snacks and farm products such as vegetables, pickles and even flowers. Many drop buy specially to buy seasonal ingredients such as vegetables, fruits, Hida spring onions, waxy corn and pickled vegetables grown by farmers nearby.
Definitely a pleasant & relaxed atmosphere as tourists and locals alike move from stall to stalls. We were captivated by a stall that sells kohi on a crust, long q and sell as 500 yen a small ‘cup’. The longer q ones are the beef-sushi and skewer. They are plenty opportunities to buy take-out food and eat while walking around the streets. Common ones include the dango (sweet dumplings) and ice cream, dumplings or skewers made of Hida beef raised in Gifu. Even taste fresh sushi, just too many stalls/shops where you can taste delicious food.
The Miyagawa river flows through the center of the town, and along this stretch some locals are down to the bankside having fun, walking their pet dogs and even panic time.
Some shops sell Japanese souvenirs such as chopsticks and small items in addition to Takayama local souvenirs including sarubobo dolls and Ichii Itto-bori wooden carvings. We bought some, to beautify our home back in SG.
We walked till the other end at Yayoi bridge and made a u-turn back. Happily we rounded our trip here within 1.5 hour and strolled back to Yasugawa Street
then to Betsuin Shorenji Temple side..

We arrived here around 11am taking a day trip from Nagoya. Unfortunately, not many stalls were still open. I supposed it could have been much more vibrant if we had arrived earlier in the morning.

Morning markets are held in many parts of Japan, with farmers, fishermen, craftsmen among others offering their products to customers at temporary stalls. There are a handful of morning markets with a long tradition, Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture, Katsuura in Chiba Prefecture as well as Takayama with two, one along Miyagawa and another in front of the Jin-ya. We strolled along Miyagawa River till we reached Enako River. Perhaps it was because it was an early Friday morning, but the market was not that packed with stalls. Our guides told us the difficulty of maintaining the number of stalls due to retirement and other issues.

Pleasant morning walk through the market to see the local produce and crafts being sold. Get your coffee cup from one of the stalls - expresso or macchiato (600yen) served in a edible baked pastry 'cup', after finishing the expresso/macchiato bring the coffee cup back for a dash of whipped cream have with the cup.
Found a good breakfast place - Hibikorekoujitsu towards the end of the market that served a set of sushi rice balls and a cup of beef or pork miso soup.

Pleasant walk with many stalls and variety of goods sold at the market. Kind of enjoyable visit with various activities ongoing. Sell veg and fruits, plants, souvenirs, food, coffee, miso, etc....
Has a flowing river next to market. Good for a stroll and watching fish and ducks in river.
