Interesting Building but Limited Collection

Fairly expensive for not a great deal of viewing. It's quite small so fairly limited space to showcase the collection.

The special exhibition we saw costs 3-5 times regular admission fees of other art museums/galleries. It is quite expensive. But without the special exhibition, there is not much else to see. It is unclear whether the costs for the special exhibitions are the same or the one we had costs more. Also, there is no English translation for the paintings.... More

3US$ gets you a ticket for the permanent exhibition, which is small and not impressive at all. After entering the exhibition, I started taking photos (without using the flash, of course), having not seen any signs nor told that photography is prohibited. After taking quite a few photos, a lady ran towards me, across the museum, screaming like mad -... More

The museum is right downtown, so if you happen to be there and want to check it out, it might be worth a visit. Depending on the Season, they might feature impressive collections such as Van Gogh, or local art (from the Japanese cultural flower arrangement -Ikebana -, to elementary school kids paintings.

I saw just the permanent collection. Surprisingly, they have a nice little collection of Mexican art. Being from Arizona, I found that, well . . . interesting. Some good pieces, though. They have a nice, little collection of European art--one or two pieces from many significant painters. Again, I find women well-represented, as in other Japanese art museums. All in... More

It was over priced for how small it was but the art was overall pretty good. It leaves a lot to be desired.

The Nagoya City Art Museum is located right in the heart of the city, often with major exhibitions, and within walking distance of a number of other attractions and public transportation. Two wonderful exhibitions from 2011 were "TOMATSU SHOMEI : PHOTOGRAPHS" and "Rembrandt : The Quest for Chiaroscuro". Personally, I would recommend going when there is a special exhibition, as...
