Wow! Such an incredible zoo. So many things to see it takes all day. My only suggestion for improvement would be for them to charge more for the tickets. Costs only 500 Yen --should be 3 or 4 times that for what they offer as well as numerous maintenance projects could be completed with the extra funds. Overall, I highly recommend this place. Lots of walking (so be warned) as this is a huge property.

Went there for the first time the other day.

While it looks like the Botanical gardens are very well taken care of, I can't say the same for the animals.

Many of them are kept in SHOCKINGLY BAD environments.

What first comes to my mind are the big felines (Jaguars, Snow Leopards), all kept in rows of VERY small enclosures.

Some of the bears also exhibited very worrying behaviours, especially an Asiatic Black Bear (ツキノワグマ) endlessly circling himself and the perimeter of his little pool.

He looked very stressed and unhappy with the very small space provided to him.

The enclosures for some of the other big animals (Bisons) looked a bit better, and the place for the Zoo's main star, the Gorilla "Shabani", looked much better than the others.

The Polar Bear (which wasn't present in his concrete enclosure at the time of my visit) made the news some years ago, apparently the poor conditions it was kept in left him with green algae growing all over his beautiful white fur!!

All in all, it looks more like a place to make humans visitors comfortable than the animals they come to see.

I'd be ok if they upped the entry fee if it meant to give better conditions to all the animals.

As it is now, I can't help but give it a 1 STAR RATING.

Very nice Zoo to visit and great layout. They are making new building now, but still great on the layout. You can visit the Zoo and the Garden. I had a few hours so looked at the animals.

Have been to this zoo several times. It’s fine in many ways, in that it has a decent array of animals, some ok food on offer and some other attractions such as the botanical gardens and some rides.

However, parts of this zoo are a bit old and run down. The cages for some of the animals, particularly the bears and big cats, are too small. Also, as with a lot of parks in Japan, there is too much concrete and not enough greenery.

Overall, I’d say it’s fine for young children as they won’t know any better, but for older children or adults it’s a little disappointing.

It is located in Aichi Prefecture,Japan and it’s about 20mins by train(Subway Higashiyama Line) from Nagoya Station. There is a Night Zoo for a week in summer vacation season. You can see many kinds of animals such as Koala, Asian and Africa Elephants, Snow Leopard, etc.
This zoo is famous for Handsome Gorilla. (Sorry that I couldn’t take his photo clearly)
Many people around Japan come to see handsome gorilla. Please enjoy the photo and video of the first born baby elephant in Higashiyama Zoo and the roar of baby lion Sora (Sky in English). And you can enjoy the view of Nagoya from the Sky Tower which is located in the zoo. The entrance fees to zoo is ¥500 (around $5) and set ticket for zoo+sky tower is ¥640(around $6 to $6.5).
You can get a badge of handsome Gorilla when donate ¥500 for zoo.
It is best not only for couples but also for the family since both adults and children can enjoy.

We had a wonderful time here, even though we had a limited time. We arrived late so we only get to go around the zoo part because the place is huge, there's also a sky tower, botanical garden and amusement park. Zoo is nice, clean and spacious.
Many interesting animals such as koala, polar bear, wolf, bison, chimpanzees, rhinos, kangaroos, flamingo and many others. Their famous gorilla has viewing hours, be there before 3pm I think. Just check their schedule. We aren't able to see him, but we still enjoy our little trip to the zoo. We sure want to go back to explore the other areas, go up the tower and hopefully catch a glimpse of the handsome gorilla next time. I highly recommend this place for zoo lovers.

Had a lovely experience at the zoo, met with one of the best staff Modoko a very wide and patient lady who had dedicated 10+ years of service to this park zoo. She thoroughly introduced all aspects of the animals found within the park.

Must be there by 10am to take advantage of this wonderful service, but dbl check with the website.

I think it was both luck and timing, since it was the same day as the 2019 Nagoya women and city marathon.

The first time to visit with our 4-year old. It has not changed much since my childhood but still it retains charm attracting children to enjoy.

The zoo is spacious and free to walk around. They have major animals that everyone wants to see.

Chimpanzees, gorilla and Koala areas are must see at Higashiyama.

For a tiny addition to the entrance fee, we are allowed to climb Sky Tower. When sunny, it’s a nice place to see the panoramic view of Nagoya although it could be quite warm up in the tower.

We have been to this zoo before but I don’t remember it being so sad. Our 11 year old daughter felt sorry for most of the animals. Many of them seemed to be pacing back and forth or going around in circles. The exhibit of North American animals was quite nice and more natural. We had fun on the paddle boats. I don’t think we will be back.
