This merchant district is 6 mins by Me-guru bus or 15 mins walk from Nagoya Castle. Traces of the old castle town in Shikemichi streetscape can be seen. Most old buildings are creatively renovated as cafes and restaurants (serving local and western food.)

The Endoji Honmachi shopping street is next to Shikemichi.

It was different from the scenery which I imagined. Not like Kyoto, Hagi, Kanazawa, etc. And it was hard for us to arrive at here. When you don't have much time, may be, there is no problem to skip.

Leaving Nagoya Castle behind, we walked towards Nagoya Station. Our destination was the area called Shikemichi, where old streetscapes remain.
Shikemichi is located on the west side of the Horikawa River that runs through Nagoya Castle, and is a merchant town that was created in conjunction with the Kiyosu-goe expansion that began at the beginning of the Edo period when Nagoya Castle was built.
It is said that the name "Shikemichi" came from the fact that after the great fire of 1700, the road was widened to four ken (about 7 meters) for fire prevention purposes and to accommodate the commercial activities of the former Ofuna Town merchants. With storehouses built on top of stone walls and townhouses with their eaves lined up along the street, it was a lovely town where you could feel the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Continuing east along Endonji-dori, you will reach an area lined with townspeople's residences. While the "Shirakabe, Tsumiki, and Chikara" area on the east side of Nagoya Castle originated as samurai residences, this is a merchant town close to the "Horikawa" canal, which was artificially dug for water transportation, and has roads that were widened to four ken for fire prevention and to facilitate land transportation. Many of the townspeople's houses and storehouses are used as restaurants and shops, and there are more people passing through here than in Endonji.
