Worth a look if you're in Livingstone. Informative, well laid out and well priced. Perhaps a bit dated and a shame no photography is allowed, but still worth the visit.

I had a guided tour at the museum. Entry is $5, and on top of that a tip for the guide. Museum is the most important in Zambia. It tells the story from the pre stoneage till current. It has a big collection from Dr Livingstone including clothes, books and letters, and tells his story. The guide was good and had many interesting anecdotes on what we saw. Well worth the tip. The museum has a nice gift shop with very fair prices.

Everyone should spend an hour learning the history of Dr. Livingstone and the Zambian region. This area is rich with discoveries of fossils, skeletons, & ancient tools from the Stone Age that are preserved and discovered by the famous Dr. Livingstone from Scotland who dedicated his life to exploration and missionary work in Southern Africa. The museum is located directly in downtown and a fine location to explore the rest of the town after learning about the many tribes throughout Zambia. Thumbs up.

The museum had several sections. The prehistoric times would be mostly of interest to historians. The transition from village life to urban life was evocative, complete with sand for a floor. The average tourist is most interested in the David Livingstone section, the room outlining his epic journeys in Africa, complete with some of his personal effects. The last section covers the transition from local slavery days to Zambia’s independence in 1964. There is a craft shop and washrooms. The entry was $5.00 US, about right for the venue. It’s not a great museum but you will leave with a better sense of the area’s greatest explorer and the political figures who have shaped modern Zambia.

We were looking forward to visiting this museum but were very disappointed that you can't take photos and there was no air con and the humidity was about 79%...hence the average instead of very good score it should be :( It was definitely a step back in time, disregarding the lack of facilities. The displays were well done and interesting, with a lot of historical information too.

Not so excellent!
It’s a bit of a time machine, taking one back to the
Museums of the 80s - dusty artifacts, painted scenes and old photos.

Interesting section on David Livingstone, with plenty to read including some of his letters.

Everything if clean and cared for, just all a little tired and in need of new life.

No photos allowed.

Dr David Livingstone Museum, a very prominent building situated on the main road to Livingstone city centre. This is the oldest and largest museum in Zambia and after purchasing the entry ticket made my way into the museum where the first section was on the evolution of the human race in Zambia. There were various sections and found the "Natural History" section of interest getting to identify various African species of birds and mammals. There is a entire section devoted to the life history of Dr David. Livingstone.

The unique offering of this museum is the actual letters written by Dr. Stanley Livingstone on his many travels throughout Africa. There is a good mix of natural history and political history as well. We like to read every single display so it took us about 2 1/2 hours to go through the museum. I preferred this museum over the one in Lusaka.

This museum was a joy to visit. The exhibits were well kept and covered everything from Dr. Livingstone and his life to the history of Zambia covering its people and wildlife.
The museum was very informative and has managed to stay away from the upsetting trend in museums of information being reduced in an effort to modernise.

It was perfect to do in about 2 hours and had an amazing breadth of exhibits.
