Yes, it is the mouth of the river Plata but it takes over an hour to cross by ferry from Argentina to Uruguay. Interesting one day visit to Colonia is well worth the USD32 cost RT of the ferry.

The Rio de la Plata not only astounds and captivates tourists today, it did the same to the Europeans who discovered it back so long ago, and since then it has been crucial to the transportation and economic needs of the region. From the ferry ride to Colonia to the strolls along the waterfront, I really enjoyed taking in the expansive views of this massive river. It’s impossible to miss or look away from when in Colonia.

If you can find a restaurant with views of the water or a hotel with rooms facing it, go and claim it. (See my review of the Radisson hotel for more on the latter!) Enjoy this beautiful natural feature!

During our visit to Colonia del Sacramento, it was impossible to escape the vastness of the Rio de la Plata. From the ferry ride from Buenos Aires to exploring the waterfront in Colonia del Sacramento, the river was expansive but calm. For the best views of the river and a nearby tiny island head over to the Mirador Panoramico. This terrace is free to visit and is a great place to really appreciate the vastness of the Rio de la Plata.

This place is very busy every night with sightseers watching the sun go down. You can also see Buenos Aires in the distance.

No doubt this is a big old river. Some great sunsets can be seen from Colonia. Best viewed with a beer.

The tributaries of the river are the Parana River, the Paraguay River, and the Uruguay River. It forms the border between Brazil and Paraguay , and is part of the border between Argentina and Uruguay. It eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Many cities use the water for their drinking water, and though there is supposedly clean up attempts on the books, little seems to have been done to deal with pollution and global warming effects.

Pretty sunset and shallow beach. Fun to watch horses and riders take a dip. Relaxed and pleasant. Easy parking.

There are several aspects of the town that reflect its relationship with the river, from monuments with anchors, the lighthouse [or faro] and the rambla. Its most noteworthy manifestation is sunset, usually making it worth your wait. There are restaurants and bars that you can frequent at the optimum time too.
