Lighthouse with an Attitude

The lighthouse is open for a climb up lots of stairs and the view over the Rio de la Plata on a nice day is incomparable.

Colonia is a pleasant place and the lighthouse is one of its attractions. It cost very little to get into and it is good excercise climbing the narrow staircase to the top. Good views from the top, but it was very windy when we were there. Just a fun thing to do while you are in Colonia for the day.

I was stuck in Buenos Aires because of business and since I know that metropolis very well I decided to take a 2 day trip to Colonia Uruguay just across the river of the same name and only a few ours by car. To my surprise I encountered a very well preserved XVI and XVII Century area that has been... More

Colonia is pretty but also very quiet, so as most people visit on day trips you'll find yourself with plenty of time to fill. The lighthouse has a decent view, but in reality you wouldn't visit unless you were trying to squander away an empty afternoon. As it's a lighthouse be aware that the stairs are small and cramped, so... More

When I was preparaing for a 40-day tour of South America I read that Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay was a "gem", a historic town frozen in time. I expected a maze of old streets and quaint old buildings. We booked a day trip from Buenos Aires. Yes, there are old buildings but among them are modern homes. The historic... More

It is one of the few things to do in Colonia. It's less than $1 to go up and take some pretty pictures. We went in the winter and it was mega windy so once we got to the top the wind made my long curly hair stand completely upright on it's own! Well worth the UY$15 for that funny... More

I think all of Colonia is very pretty, but there's really not much that you *have* to see. The lighthouse is the only thing that I would strongly recommend. And yes, it is nice at sunset.

I went up there to see the sunset, and it was beyond beautiful! Lovely view of the Buenos Aires skyline far in the horizon. If you're in Colonia, make sure you visit the lighthouse - better yet: visit the lighthouse and see the sunset. You won't regret it!

We very luckily (rather than by planning) decided to climb the lighthouse just before sunset. The most beautiful sunset out over Buenos Aires - a faint city on the horizon. It costs around 40p (I think) to go up, make sure you do it at sunset, you won't be disappointed. Plus you get to see lovely views over the rest... More

It is absolutely mandatory to climb the stairs of this lighthouse when visiting Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay . It’s the highest point in this picturesque colonial township. The view is spectacular. Besides the city you see the vast La Plata River . We also saw the Buenos Aires sky line. The climb will certainly bust your appetite and there... More
