We enjoyed passing thru this old restored fort drawbridge into Barrio Historico. This is a fun area for shooting photos and selfies.

BOTTOM LINE: Worth strolling thru this unique entry. It is not the original wall but nicely restored to look like it once was. We loved walking thru Colonia del Sacramento. It is really a quaint piece of history time warp as you walk thru the old street and old shops. Plan a little extra time to enjoy your time here. MY RATING: 8/10

The gate dates from 1745. Some of the reconstruction was done so expertly it would take a trained eye to notice. It has a wooden drawbridge. Passing through it, you enter the World Heritage Site historic area.

Not much to do but see the wall and some cannon and, of course, walk through the gate. But going there is a must, to get a feel for the old fort.

We entered the old town of Colonia del Sacramento, Barrio Historico, through the 18th century city gate and drawbridge. It was constructed in 1745 by the Portuguese settlers. The drawbridge was recovered in the 1970s with majority of the drawbridge remaining intact. There’s also some historic cannons along the remains of the old wall.

I have read in an online blog before visiting Colonia, that the best way to enter its Barrio Historico is through this gateway, Porton de Campo. With the help of Google Map, we found our way here, to enter into Barrio. True enough, the wooden gateway gives us that "ancient" feel. This gate is truly the landmark of the Historical Centre.

Not much to see, but every tourist feels compelled to take a photo in front of this restored historic gate, which was an entrance through the fortified city wall.

Many better better photo opportunities inside the old town.

El Portón de Campo is an entrance to a different section of the old quarter and goes back to colonial times. One of the favorite places for taking puctures

Colonial de Sacramento is a small town with a lot of character, but if you go know that you will have lost a day of your vacation. Would have loved to see this area 10 years ago. The boat ride is pleasant enough, but it is impossible to get a cup of coffee or a drink because there is a duty free store onboard and people are frenzy shopping, and there is no bar or coffee shop available. Bring your own! Strolling the area of Colonia is nice with nice old buildings, but after a couple of hours, I wished there was a way back to Buenos Aries sooner than the boat ride in the late afternoon with the same frenzy. The best thing about the boat ride back was a video on the screen regarding the importance of being responsible humans and taking care of the planet. The video gave important information regarding deforestation, water scarcity, and what we as humans need to do to protect what we have. Excellent information and with a captive audience.
The restaurants and coffee shops in the Colonia are over priced and food below average.

We walked 1 block west from our Posada El Viajero B&B to enter the 1995 UNESCO Historic Quarter of Colonia. This long walled entrance leads to the Plaza Mayor and directly on to the Faro. The gate is a perfect morning backdrop for photos.

Good place for photos but a challenge to take them without group tours. Go early before the day trippers arrive or afternoons.
