We visited on a shore excursion with a guide, who was amazing, he gave us so much information.
We were there first thing in the morning so it wasn't very busy which allowed us to take loads of photos and enjoy the historic ruins without the usual throng of crowds.
The history behind the ruins in fascinating so I would recommend a guide to get the most out of the visit.
The scenery and views around the site are also lovely and it has a kind of tranquil feel to the place.
Well worth a visit.

This was not part of our original itinerary and we made a small detour to these ruins - turns out it was a pleasant surprise.

The ruins were quite intact with a lot of motifs, pillars and the (remains now transferred to Italy) tomb of St John.

Highly recommend you have a guide bring you here, otherwise you miss out on a lot of small details that make this place interesting.

We came by train from Izmir and it was only a short stroll from the railway station to get here...entrance fee was a very reasonable 30 liras...the ruins are very interesting, and you can go on to the castle on the hill, no separate entry free

This is a very interesting sight. From here you can see the ruins if the church and the tomb of St. John. You also get a nice glimps of the Selcuk castle and you can look down over the ruins of Artemis. Beware not to get sucked into the trap of the unofficial tour guides. They will tell you they can take you to the castle, they have a special entry. It's not true they will take your money, take you close to the wall and then they disappear. They will also follow you around and tell you that you need a guide and again this is not true.

I stayed in a hotel below this historic landmark and had a wonderful tour by a guide that worked at this historical site.
The restoration to this place is very admirable. Above this place is a castle that you may feel the old energy. I can imagine where the soldiers stood watch

If you are touring near Efesus don't forget to visit this place. But taking little children or stroller is not easy. It is a beautiful ancient holy place.

When you in the area then you have to visit it.
Here was St. Johns grave , but after the first WW the Italian solders took all reaming's to Italy (they stole it in my opinion).
Now you can just see where he was buried, hope one day Italy will give it back.

As a family of 5, we visited this site one afternoon during our 3-night stay in Selcuk (we'd already visited Ephesus the previous afternoon - see separate review). The price was 36 TL each (about £5 each at the exchange rate). It was very quiet and peaceful - a small number of other tourists were coming and going, quietly pottering around the site. It is basically split into two sections - the lower basilica remains (which we all rather liked in terms of atmosphere and impressive views) and the higher, relatively recently re-built castle wall (which you can also enter but cannot climb upon) and its internal ruins. We all agreed we were glad we visited (it is of particular historical interest because of the link to St.John (he of the gospel) and Mary, mother of Jesus).
The one aspect of the whole site we were not impressed with was the rather soulless (and unreasonably expensive) 'cafe' - definitely missing a trick. We didn't see anybody make a purchase whilst we were there (in fact, I'm not sure if anybody entered at all). That said, the attached toilets were extremely clean (and free).
Overall, we thought the site was worth a visit but obviously, it is on a completely different scale to Ephesus - at the time of writing, the latter was priced at 72 TL (about £10) - and so it is very much a personal choice with regard to value for money and time priorities.

This place was amazing. It has the most amazing views and definitely worth the stop. Not many people visit this place but it has a lot of history. You can see most of Selcuk here and the Temple of Artemis in the distance.
