The printed guides do not include it among the many religious sites recommended in this area, so we would never have visited it if a sign had not reported it on the main road between Urgup and Nevsehir. We trusted and took the road which, in a few hundred metres, took us close to this rock church. Which has no frescoes inside, but is pleasant to visit - with little expense and a flashlight provided by the caretaker - for its two floors connected by narrow tunnels, large rooms and dovecotes. Especially if, as in my/our case, seen before going to Goreme, it makes an impression.

Not far past the commercially run well organised Goreme Open Air Museum is a small signpost pointing to the Aynali Kilise (church) in a cave. Opposite of commercial. A friendly curator sits outside and sells entry for 5 TL.He provides a torch each and is happy to chat. Climb up inside just fascinating. Very quiet.

Fantastic ancient monastery with small tunnels and wonderful paintings. We were one of the few people there. Guard gave us a flash light and we had so much fun crawling in dirt and climbing carved rock staircases. We felt like Indiana Jones not knowing what was at the end of the tunnel.

This is a wonderful place to visit. It is not as crowded as the rest of the destinations but it’s definitely worth your time. It is an amazing experience. It is exciting and there is enough there to see that it’s worth your time and trip. Make sure you go there.

The paintings are very special within narrow tunnels and many chambers, still stunning surroundings and beautiful architecture. Book a guide if you can it will be so useful!

I'm glad I have visited this place with a tour guide, so now I know a lot about the history of this area. It's important to broaden your horizons, and visiting such places is just to the point!

We found this by accident, and what a gem it is. This may be one of the oldest churches in Goreme, possibly dating from the Roman period. It gets its name from the crude symmetry of the Iconoclastic reductionist designs in the nave. The real beauty of it is that there are several secret passages, and the guide will provide a torch for you to explore them. Each room could be sealed by a blocking stone. He also pointed out a wine press and stalls for for beehives. A lovely church, worth the visit for the chat with the guide alone.

Shortly before the last, frighteningly steep, descent to the open air museum, there is a sign indicating a rather nice though plain church: the Aynalı church. . Apart from the church there are several other rooms that one can reach climbing through the rocks. It is named Symmetrical Church on some sites, ayna meaning mirror as in my dictionary it is translated as "paneled", and the front has noticeable panels (though they are not unique to this church).

The church itself isn’t much different than others in Göreme - what makes this one special is it’s multiple chambers and narrow tunnels you can access. The entrance is 10TKL per person and you’ll be provided with a lamp.

To avoid if you are claustrophobic.
