If you are around Chiang Mai or Mae Hong Son, do not miss this road trip. You can rent small scooters too and it's easily doable in it. We rented big bikes of 500cc and those big bike added more adventure to our trip.
I had plenty of time in the area so thought I'd give this a go.
So I rented a 125cc scooter tried to find one the sounded okay, decent tyres brakes etc. and set off.
5 days, Pai-Mae Hong Son-Mae Sariang-Mae Chaem-Chiang Mai-Pai

Lots of great curves and stunning scenery, plenty of coffee shops etc en route and plenty of budget accommodation at each town but if you want a long trip try Australia or Africa. There are no long trips in Thailand

I don’t think you need not book in advance if you are not for sure about your plans. There are plenty of options available enroute so you can book as per your travel plans. Pai is the only busy town so if possible call the hotel half way to check on availability. Cheers.
