About
The town of Kanchanaburi is 129 kilometres North-West of Bangkok and is best reached by road, along the National Highway which runs north from the capital. There are bus and train services from Bangkok. Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is situated adjacent to Saeng Chuto Road which is the main road through the town. When approaching from Bangkok, the cemetery is on the left side of the road, towards the far (northern) end of the town. A Commission signpost faces the cemetery on the opposite side of the road.

This was a very emotional tour at the museum and war grave cemetery. Although it was raining quite hard it only added to the emotions of this moment in history. I thought I knew about the death railway but after nearly 2 hours in the museum I learnt the truth about the death railway. The museum is well laid out and in a good logical way with a huge range of exhibits with English explanations. We then wandered out to the cemetery and spent an emotional time taking in the enormity of this horrific moment in history. Well worth a visit.

We arranged a 5 day pilgrimage through a company in Australia to see and follow the footsteps of my grandfather who was a POW on the death railway.
The tour was run by the museums staff and was BRILLIANT! It was so well researched and the stuff we found out about my grandfather was beyond incredible!
From the moment we got picked up in Bangkok in a private van we were well looked after. Coffee, lunch and snacks arranged and they bent over backwards to help us.
The museum is awesome and really interesting and special mention goes to Andrew, Terry, Keow and Pum who are all dedicated and special human beings. Thank you so much for a trip that we will always remember.

Despite some snarky reviews we found this cemetery very moving especially after just going through the nearby museum detailing the depravities inflicted on the POWs and non-combatants in building the nearby bridge and railroad in WW2.
Reading the inscriptions on the tombstones made the realities of this period very real.
The cemetery is very well maintained and a tribute to these poor unfortunates who died here.

We decided to do our second trip to the CWGC Kanchaburi to pay our respects to the lives represented there of all who suffered whilst POW's during WW2 building the Death Railway. It was 40 degree heat so gave us an insight to the sort of temperatures the mean would have been up against we barely lasted one hour. However, being ex Royal Signals I managed to take photos of all the graves of the fallen Royal Signals men i hadnt realised there to be so many some circal 260. Point to note its a cemertary proper respect whilst attending is a must. Its also worthwhile to go to the museum, if you like how about shouting morning tea for the workers tending the graves, We did, they were very thankfull.

Beautifully maintained, tranquil resting place for a great number of Allied POW’s who lost their lives a long way from home. It was a thought provoking and emotional place, and an opportunity to pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in horrific circumstances. We then went to hellfire pass where there is an Australian funded memorial museum.

We visit the cemetery while on tour to the River Kwai from Bangkok. It was really interesting to do this prior to visiting the railway to give you an insight to the incredible and tragic history behind the building of the railway. It’s pleasing that the cemetery is so well care for but sad to think that this is only 10% of the men that lost their lives as prisoners of war. Very sad and moving as such young brave men.

Visited here on our recent trip to Thailand. We were the only people here apart from our guide and a gardener tending the grounds so it was very peaceful. There was an atmosphere of calm, very moving. The grounds are very well maintained. Would recommend a trip here.

Magnificent military cemetery, as is often the case! I must admit that given the heat usually reigning in Thailand, I feared that this place would be somewhat abandoned and that was not at all the case! It is magnificent, green, very well maintained and obviously full of history and emotion at the sight of all these aligned graves of these unfortunate Prisoners of War, true war martyrs! So see!

We visited the cemetry the day following our visit to Hellfire Pass and it brings it home to you the scale of the suffering and deaths of the young soldiers. Every gravestone tells a story. The cemetry is beautifully manicured and has a military air to it.
Good to see families here.
A must visit to remember them.

This Cemetery is an interesting historical sight after visiting the River Kwai bridge and the neighbouring Thailand-Burma Railway Centre Museum. It is very well maintained. The sheer number of graves makes you feel sad.
Next to the War Cemetery there is a Chinese Cemetery which gives a very interesting contrast.

HI all,
did you visit the cemetery as part of a River Kwai bridge tour? I did the tour 25 years ago with a taxi driver but when I return with my wife next month I'd rather book a guided tour.
Is it cheaper to book once you are in Thailand or does it make little difference?
Also any suggestions as to who to book with / best value much appreciated.
Best
Paul
