Thawan Duchanee (September 27, 1939 - September 3, 2014) was a Thai contemporary painter, architect and sculptor with an international reputation. In 2001, this notable artist was given the price by the Office of the National Culture Commission of Thailand as the National Thai Artist in Fine art and Visual art. Thawan is not only famous for his paintings but also architecture. His architectural masterpiece is Black House. It was the residence for Thawan for the rest of his life. In Thai, 'baan' means home or house and 'dam' means black. The Black House isn't just one structure, but a collection of around 40 buildings of varying shapes and sizes dotted around a peaceful garden. Created by Thailand national artist Thawan Duchanee, the grounds include nearly 40 small black houses made of wood, glass, concrete, bricks, or terracotta in various unique styles and design scattered around the temple area. The cluster of houses accommodates Thawan's collections of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns, and silver and gold items from around the world. Several of the houses exhibit Balinese and Burmese architecture and art dating back to the Ayutthaya Period. The artist uses bones as a source of inspiration to paint. It is definitely not a place for animal lovers. There are also various kinds of baskets and drums from many regions and countries on display at Baandam. Not all exhibits are open to public.

We stayed close by so walked to see this, known as the black house locally. Very cool, fascinating architecture, different to the normal. Worth a look if you are in the area seeing white temple.

This place is the brainchild of Thawan Duchanee ,a Thai scholar of art and sculpture who has created a sort of black art collection of buildings ,artistic designs and sculptures. An interesting contrast to the much grander White temple also in Chiangmai Rai

It is interesting to wander through the parklike space and see the different types of buildings, from a temple to a whale structure that was the artist's bedroom when he lived there. I liked it better than my husband did. You can use your imagination to try to see into the mind of the artist who created such diverse structures... More

This unusual museum is not to be missed. It may not be your taste but it is definitely worth a visit to see a different kind of arts.

Interesting to wander through... But felt like a rich eccentric person's estate. Glad I saw it but would not travel out of the way to do so

The art pieces are all in black! That made them unique. From houses, furnitures, decorations, etc... they're all in black. Unique and interesting.

The message overall moral is clear: people are wicked. Or it would be most like the supposed artist is wicked / Dark / and evil. This was the worst Exposure of inner demons along with actual Exposure of the darkness of the artist if you could even call it art. Do Not waste your time or money for this Baan... More

It's an interesting museum with both indoor and outdoor display area showing the works of the artist. It's pleasant to walk around and take some good photos. Nice Lana-style architecture.

This is a definite see for the art lover. This is one artists collection of bones, carvings, paintings etc over several acres. Very interesting to see the whole vision.
