- Soumen CKolkata (Calcutta), India268 contributionsNice templeYou will have an underwhelming feeling particularly if you visit this place after the White temple. However, I quite liked the place. It was not very crowded. The temple and other statues are nice. The blue tone makes it a little unique.Visited October 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 September 2023
- FoodTraveler_theworldBangkok, Thailand3,837 contributionsSplendid & unique blue temple in Chiengrai.Unique stunning blue temple makes this place attractive for tourists and local people. Also, it is one of popular scene in social media where you may always see. However, please dress properly without short sleeves shirt or short skirt in order to pay respect to Buddha and Buddhism. No entrance fee and convenient parking.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 October 2023
- samaadelebLeeds, United Kingdom44 contributionsBlue Temple tripBeautiful temple well worth a visit. Local food stalls and a small bazar, be careful with shoes as the rules differ by temple. Nice coffee shop opposite main gate (bike coffee)for the trip if you are on the road.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 November 2023
- VeganMadeEasyGlen Ellyn, Illinois2,172 contributionsAmazingFascinating to see the many details. Heaven on one and hell on the other side symbolized! No entrance fee. A little strange that cars are driving through. The tour buses right in front of the entrance could have looked for a different spot. The story about Buddha’s life inside the temple is well illustrated. All in all well worth the visit!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 January 2024
- James INew York City, New York575 contributionsDo Not IgnoreWhile the white temple seems to be the most popular pd the major Chiang Rai attractions, the blue temple may appeal to some people even more. The mix of the different blues, accented by the golden details is eye catching and makes for some very artistic displays here. Plenty of opportunities for great photos. Like the white temple, I was a little disappointed to see the building material here being a plaster type mix applied to a wire mesh. This is not durable and there were many spots it was crumbling and cracking from being touched. Again, definitely still worth the trip especially when these temples are located not too far from one another.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2024
- kwanjai206Snoqualmie, Washington854 contributionsBlue temple!Beautiful temple! Grounds were beautiful and clean. I especially liked the structure in the back that was still under construction because it wasn’t all blue, so it was a nice contrast to see. Before going in to the main temple, you will need to take off your shoes and there are shoe cubbies outside you can put your shoes in. There’s some shopping for souvenirs and snacks and drinks you can buy outside as well. I think this temple is very much still under the radar because there weren’t very many people here compared to some of the other places we’ve been. No entrance fee here. Bathrooms were clean and they ask for donations to help keep the bathrooms clean. 5 or 10 baht will do. Pretty standard for a lot of temples we visited on our trip. No toilet paper but regular toilets here.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 March 2024
- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom1,85,662 contributionsBeautiful Blue Thai Neo-Traditional TempleNamed for the predominant colour of the temple which is blue and gold, the artist has created an awe inspiring place with not just a temple but artworks too. The entrance has two guardians at the front as is normal in Thai temples, but there were very friendly looking guardians. The main temple has beautiful murals of the life of the Buddha, while the high altar a giant statue of Buddha in white and is mesmerising against the blue background. The temple grounds. Also has a museum about the history of the temple and various artworks created by the artist. The steps up to the museum alone is worth the walk because of all the statues that adorn the staircase.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 April 2024
- Darth_VaiderScotland, United Kingdom333 contributionsAmazing temple! This is a must see while in Chiang Rai. It’s an amazing temple to see. It does get busy so aim for early in the morning. The only downside is a very rude woman in front of the temple shouting at tourists and snapping a bbq tong to get their attention when they don’t know where to leave their shoes. No need for this as it’s not clear that unlike other temples your shoes go in a shelf to the left and right of the temple and not at the front. Apart from that it is a great experience.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024
- isnakebiteMilton Keynes, United Kingdom785 contributionsMesmerisingThis was the first of 3 temples that we visited in a day in our really short trip in Chiang Rai. . It set the level. I had an idea what to expect but I kept it a secret from my Thai wife. As expected it's completely different when you are there. We walked around for a while and then sat inside for 10 minutes and were blown away, taking it all in. We could have easily stayed longer.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2024

Although the White Temple gets all the attention in Chiang Rai, Wat Rong Seur Ten (also commonly called the "Blue Temple") is also surprisingly beautiful. It doesn't get the hordes of visitors and therefore is actually pleasantly calming (also due to the "coolness" of the color blue) and peaceful. Best visited early morning or late afternoon. The Blue Temple makes for a good "last stop" of the day as it is open until 8:00 p.m. There is no entrance fee.

Wow! Simply amazing! A beautiful Temple just over the river from the town centre. About 3 kms from the Clock tower.
An Awe inspiring place from the moment you walk up to the imposing door guard statues (dvarapalas) and into the grounds.
Very tranquil and thought provoking.
There is the main temple with a large white Buddha statue inside. Every wall and ceiling were beautifully decorated with patterns and murals.
It is a Buddhist temple so please be respectful. Cover your shoulders and knees, take your shoes off and leave them outside.
Never sit with your feet pointing towards the altar/Buddha statue.
It is free to enter but I strongly suggest a donation in one of the pots around. It is the lady you can do, for being allowed into such a beautiful Temple!
Do not miss this whilst in Chiang Rai!
30 minutes or so is enough time. There are some stalls selling local products and crafts.
Also opposite is some blue (obviously) coconut ice cream offered at a couple of stalls! Definately worth it.

“The Blue Temple” of Chiang Rai
Wat Rong Suea is also known as the Blue Temple due to its color especially the interior. We reached this temple as part of a taxi tour to the golden triangle. Entrance to this site was free. Right in front at the entrance to the compound, is a white Buddha seated on blue pedestals within a water fountain. A glance to the left here, will reveal another white Buddha, seated with his followers. The main building is the viharn which is golden and blue in colour, on the exterior. The entrance to the Viharn is guarded by Nagas . The building’s interior is strikingly blue in colour, and a sight to behold. There are two rows of pillars with murals holding the roof up. The walls which are also in blue have painting with scenes of the life times of Buddha. The ceilings are very beautifully done, again in blue and golden colour. The main deity is a large white Buddha on the altar.
As you walk behind the Viharn, there is a blue and gold coloured chedi. There is a White standing Buddha at the back of the Viharn. There are some shops on one side, selling food drinks and souveneirs. We were there at 9am and the weather was pleasant. We spent about 1 hour here to look around and capture some pictures. There were some taxis parked, but it would be still advisable to book a round trip and have the driver wait.

This temple is free entrance and is about a 10 minute drive from downtown Chiang Rai (we left from the Chiang Rai bus station). The architecture is beautiful. The entire temple is painted in gold and blue with two dragons guarding the entrance and a big, white Buddha inside.
This temple was just finished building a few years ago so it is not as busy as some other temples (ex. the White Temple), but it is still pretty crowded.
This is a must see in Chiang Rai!

My favourite temple of all the temples I visited in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Really cool inside - but quirky with some of the art on the walls (eg. Little Iron Man, Harry Potter and Jack Sparrow paintings on one wall) quite different to some of the more traditional temples.

This temple is beautiful both inside and out and is located a few kilometres outside of Chiang Rai. It is recently built (2016) and translates to 'House of the Dancing Tiger' named after tigers that once roamed the area. It is very intricately designed with a beautiful white image of the Buddha inside and both the outside and inside are an amazing blue.

Always compared with the more famous White Temple, the Blue Temple has equally as many charms, and is rather less 'ín your face'. It has a very spiritual feel and the detail is absolutely stunning. Everywhere you turn there's another beautiful piece of artwork. Give yourself enough time to soak it all up and enjoy it. And take your camera!

I took an organized day trip from Chiang Mai. In addition to the Blue Temple, the program included White and Black Temple. The tour took place at noon and we had limited time. Next time, I'd rather rent a car and stay in the temple as much as I need. I am a photographer and I like to have good light and time to photograph. The building and the whole complex delighted me.

Starting from the initial and spectacular entry this temple does not disappoint and, in the old days, several rolls of film would be used to record both the detail and the overall views. The main hall too is lovely, overlooked by a serene but friendly white Buddha. Don't miss the beautiful angels at his feet either.
The entire ensemble is characterised by elaborate sculptures - for want of a better word 'modern thai roccoco' common throughout the city of Chiang Rai.

We visited at dusk, which seemed a good time as there wasn't an abundance of tourists (but still quite a few). The colours are interesting and it's definitely a change from all the other temples in Thailand. No cost to visit. You can't take photos inside the temple. It's worth a visit, but you won't need a lot of time there.

Buonasera,
Consigli ?? Organizzare sul posto oppure online ? Dormire a Chiang Mai oppure a Chiang Rai? Grazie in anticipo. S&D
Written 3 September 2019

Cordiali saluti .

Is this open 24hrs? As we are planning to visit early in the morning, around 5:30AM.

Most temples open early and close in the evening. But this is more of an art thing than an actual temple. I think it opens around 8am

I can only choose between the blue temple and the mae sai border market, what one I should go?
Written 6 December 2017
I have been to both many times. The maisae market is OK and full of stalls selling items - a lot of them are cheap and not so nice but sometimes you can get nice bedset or something. It is many years ago that it was a cheap place to buy everything. It is a very busy crossing town with lots of people from china, thailand and myanmar buying and selling. The blue temple is a beautiful temple that is a good memory to take home with you. I think you can find market selling cheap things like maisae in your own country. Go to blue temple.
