The temple is situated on an island, and can be accessed via local boat safari. The temple is beautiful, with large structures of Buddha situated around the temple. The monks are so kind and the wildlife are so cute!

Highly recommend to visit when travelling around Sri Lanka!

Kothduwa is a Buddhist temple situated in an isolated island in the Maduganga river. There are statues of Buddha there. You have to go there by a boat and the staircase for the entrance of the temple is facing the river. There is a giant squirrel living there.

This Buddist Temple is situated on Kothduwa Island on the Maduganga (Madu) River and is only accessible by boat.

We visited the Temple and Shrine as part of our Madu River Safari on Friday 7th October. Staying at Riu Sri Lanka in Ahungalla which is about 3 Kilometres from the start of the river safari.

Kothduwa Island is a small well maintained island and a Monk lives on the Island,.People are welcome to wander around and view the various shrines as long as they dress appropriately, guests are also asked to remove their shoes.

There are notices around asking guests not to take photographs of people in front of the shrines, photography is permitted.

There were some squirrel like animals on the Island which we were given bananas to feed them.

The Monk came out and greeted us, a charming gentle man, he also tried a prayer thread on our wrists and blessed us before we left.

It really is a tranquil and peaceful place and a lovely little Island with its wonderful religious shrines. Enjoyed our visit immensely and will remember it for a long time to come.

Visitors are asked to make a small donation before leaving, we were advised about 200 to 300 Rupees (about £1 to £1.50) is appropriate.

We were very fortunate we were the only 2 guests , plus our guide, visiting when we were there.
