Whale Culture Village was recently renovated to look similar to the retro theme museums that are all over Korea. The village recreated a few streets to look like the Ulsan Jangsaengpo Village from the 60’s to 80’s with each shop decorated with props from the corresponding era. Unlike most of these retro museums, this one doesn’t seem as random as it tries to recreate the actual village that occupied the same area which was famous for whaling. Although it’s not the main attraction in the area (the aquarium and whale museum are), it’s a nice stop to take some photos and enjoy the nostalgia for just the two dollar admission.

It was empty, no patrons on a weekday morning. Seven of us were the only patrons there. We took our time to view the exhibits after buying the tickets. The miniature models of the village, the pictures of hunting whales, how the different parts of the whale could be made into certain products like soap, stationery & oil & etc. were interesting.

There were 2 dolphins swimming in a tall pool. There are not more than 3 levels of exhibits. The stairs & a lift serve the levels. There was one that focused on recycling process. We learnt a lot from here. We also went to the smaller aquarium with different types of live fishes.

As the place was quiet, the stroll around was fairly comfortable.

There wasn’t anything for kids to play with, just posing for photos with the fishes.

I feel that more could be done for this place. Only if you happened to be around there and have extra time to spare, you can opt out from the visit.

This park is located just up the hill from the whale museum in Ulsan. To get there take a right out of the museum parking lot and follow the brown sign to the left and up the hill to a small free parking lot.
We were lucky to stumble upon this park as it wasn't advertised at all. It is fairly new and was opened in 2015. Most of the park is free and includes life size whale statues, artwork, a playground, and a huge whale replica that you can walk inside of and see the actual size of a whales organs. My kids loved it.
There is a replica of a whaling village I'm going to guess is set in the 1950s. It cost only 1000 won to enter. We didn't really learn a lot about whaling there (which my kids didn't like to hear about anyway) but we had fun walking around and looking in all of the buildings.
I highly recommend spending an hour or two here if you are in Ulsan. It was far more enjoyable than the whale museum/aquarium down the street.

Not omly is it fun to walk around the culture village and look into the past, but you can do it in vintage costume. You can rent vintage school uniforms while visiting the culture village. It's hugely appealing, because the place is full of photo opportunities. You can imagine yourself in Korea's past as you walk through a school, homes, candy stores, a cafe and others all authentically recreated as they would have been 40 years ago.

Located near the whale museum and a small walk uphill place offers great place for kids to play and families to relax.
