제주 해녀박물관에서는 해녀의 생활, 해녀의 일터, 해녀의 생애 등을 주제로 3층의 쾌적한 공간 안에 전시되어 있습니다.
The Haenyeo Museum has exhibits on three floors in a comfortable space with themes such as the life of Haenyeo, the workplace of Haenyeo, and the life of Haenyeo.

해녀들분들이 직접 기증한 생동감 넘치는 전시품들과 바다를 사랑하는 단체들의 작품까지 제주에 방문 하신다면 해녀들의 삶을 들여다보는 건 어떤가요?
From the lively exhibits donated by haenyeo to the artworks of organizations that love the sea, how about looking into the lives of haenyeo when visiting Jeju?

※ 3층 전망대에서 해녀들의 작업장과 작업하는 해녀들을 볼 수 있습니다.
※ You can see haenyeo's workshop and working haenyeo from the observation deck on the 3rd floor.

This museum explains the life of women divers of Jeju Islands, how they lived and made a living. Once you learn a little more about their lives, it becomes obvious this is a very hard life, not nearly as glamorous as some people would think... In fact, it is pretty brutal when when they have to dive in the frigid waters...

It was a good place to know the history of women divers in Korea. For foreigners, it was something new about the Korean culture that we got to know. There was a AV show for 15 minutes followed by looking around the pictures.

Learned a lot about the daily lives of the Haenyeo and the history. Lots of information in English and you can ask the front desk to play an informative movie about the Haenyeo in English as well. Find a Haenyeo restaurant nearby to round out the experience.

Our initial plan is to visit museum then heading to the beach side to meet the divers to see how they work and that will bring us more understanding the history & culture behind. Unfortunately, we've no luck at all, we only manage to visit the museum. Because the diver only work on some days which depend on the weather and sea condition. It is NOT every WEEKDAY! like most of the reviews in Tripadvisor and some other travel blogger who has been visited there before. I'm so so frustrated when I knew this from the locals. I don't understand why they put in their reviews or comment if they are unsure, its misleading and really let ppl down. So, if you plan to visit the divers, please check with the locals (people living nearby there or the restaurants nearby) on the first day you are in Jeju.

I've been very interested in the haenyeo ever since I first visited Jeju-do. This museum has some interesting exhibitions about the life and work of the haenyeo. Admission is very cheap, a bit over 1000 won for an adult. It's recommended to watch the short documentary about the haenyeo before visiting the exhibitions, to get the most out of your visit. It plays near the lobby. There's a gift shop on site with haenyeo-related items.

Haenyeo literally means, 'Women of the Sea' and this museum pays tribute to the historical significance of this dying profession. Solely carried on the backs of women on this island, these incredible ladies have carried their over 400 year old craft into the 21st century where instrumentally built the economic foundation for many of the Jeju natives.

Mothers who passed on their skills and knowledge of the sea to their daughters ensured that this lineage would endure the centuries of time. However, as the world faces rapid changes and economies - the Haenyeo divers are slowly becoming a ghost of the past. Recently recognized as an UNESCO intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, tremendous efforts are in place to preserve this historical tradition.

A bonus of a visit to this museum is a trip to Sunrise Peak where there is a traditional Haenyeo performance. (admission fee required)

However - enroute to Sunrise Peak is the opportunity to meet a handful of Haenyeo divers! What a thrill to visit with them in their modern 'bulteok' - warming huts.

Of all the sights of Jeju - this is perhaps the one that represents the very backbone of this amazing culture!

This is definitely a 'must see'

The musueum is dedicated to the Haenyeo - female divers who traditionally fish for molluscs and octopuses etc. without using oxygen masks. UNESCO has declared the Haenyeo part of humankind's intangible cultural heritage. We visited the museum shortly after having seen a group of Haenyeo sing their traditional song before heading out into the sea to fish. Having just witnessed the women fist hand added an extra element of interest. The museum is well set out, informative and interesting. Its models, life stories of individuals and displays of clothes and tools really bring home how tough the life of the Haenyeo was in the past (and it's not easy today). There is also a short movie explaining the history and traditions of the Haenyeo. Well worth a visit!

A small but wonderful museum to the extraordinary haenyeo divers. After a film in English and Korean a tour of the museum e poured the customs, costumes and significance of these amazing women and leaves you wondering about the future.

This was an amazing museum that I thoroughly enjoyed. A theater plays a documentary about the Haenyeo in several languages and the 3 exhibition halls show you how they lived, their equipment and how integral they are to the communities in which they live. The observatory lets you look out at the ocean, where if they are diving you'll be able to see the ladies in action. It's a shame that these amazing women free divers are declining in numbers, so if you get a chance to visit, do. PS There is a free diving school at Hallim (the west side of the island) if you're game.
