Think twice... it's a cultural experience but not a real bucket list
Nice place to visit for no more than 30 minutes, it's interesting to see how this market works, all the fishtanks and the workers selling their products. But I don't think that more than 20-30 minutes is needed, we walked the first and second floor very fast, all of them sell almost the same. Only of you want to eat fresh seafood, then it's a nice place as everything is fresh and alive.

Thinking about buying seafood and have the restuarants prepare them, read this first.
If you are thinking about buying seafood here and take it to the 2nd floor to have them prepare it, DON'T. This is what you should do. Go upstairs and visit the different restaurants. They all have the SAME menu and price. It seems that it is regulated. Pick the dishes you like and pay after the meal. To me coming from the US, the price is reasonable or average. We ordered too much food- crabs, shell fish, Seafood soup, seafood pancake, Beer. It came out to about $40 US dollars per person fo the four of us. If you bought seafood from downstairs, there are surcharges. They are posed on the wall. The total will come out more expensive. We came with a tour guide. She told us to just order from the "common" menu.

Cool Market but I wish we did some research before going!
The fish market is located between Nampo and Jalgachi metro stations and is a cool sight to see. The market gets seafood from all over the world including giant crabs, all kinds of shellfish, octopus, squid, fish and even lobsters from Canada. We would recommend to any seafood lover to come here. The first floor is all fish market and you can buy seafood here to bring upstairs to cook. If you pick your own there is a table setting fee at most restaurants that is at least 5000 won. If picking out seafood stresses you out (like us) you can go to the second floor for a meal. All the restaurants we had had a similar menu but not all are good as we found out (we are at Jacky's and found it wasn't the best all around). The restaurant we had tried had chewy sashimi and that ruined the meal for us and we felt if we did our research before or looked for a big crowd of foreigners (or locals) we would have had a better meal. The one side also offers good views of the sea and we ate on the backside near an escalator door so do your research and find a good spot! The seafood meal came with complimentary sides and a lady near us had a giant whole crab. The grilled clams platter we got was good with buttery clams, tender scallops and good mussels. The small platters are good for two people and you can get a couple of items and decide if you want more. All the sides that come out are included and all serve a similar experience with kimchi, leafs for wrapping, sauces, Korean pancakes and a nice spicy fish head soup. Our meal started with an appetizer including a hot octopus and prawn for each of us and we were very excited for the rest. Some of the restaurant vendors are very pushy but we picked one that had an English speaker employed and he answered a lot of our questions about the market and we decided to give it a go. The meal cost 111,000 won and we wish it had been a bit better considering the cost so again we'd recommend doing some research as not all restaurant stalls are good. The rest of the second floor has a dried seafood market. The rest of the floors don't have anything exciting and are filled with offices and community spaces but the top floor has an observatory and out back there is an "I love Jalgachi" sign.

Do note that prices are not cheap
This is our second visit after a few years and this time round we came for dinner. There are many stalls on the ground floor to buy what you want to eat, and these included snow crabs, king crabs, prawns, lobsters, flat fish, eels, oysters, clams, etc. the fishmongers will clean the seafood for you depending on how you want these cooked. They will also recommend and bring you to a stall on the upper level where you pay a charge for consuming the food as well as the cooking costs. If you buy the seafood from the stalls on the upper level, the selection you want might not be available but the price quoted is all inclusive. Rice, noodles, drinks and alcohol, etc, are charged separately. Generally, the food will be fresh but do note that prices are not cheap, and there might be issues with communication so you might want to ask about the prices and costs.

Fish market with restaurants upstairs. Set up for tourists.
Walked the first floor, marvelled at all the different types of fish (many eels/eel lookalikes), saw a wriggling eel being caught and prepared for a customer. The restaurants and dried and/processed seafood shops are on the second floor. As observed by other reviewers it does look well set-up for tourists with enthusiastic staff trying to tempt one into their restaurant for a meal. Easy enough to get to via the metro, with BIFF Square nearby.

You may not be able to communicate here
We were overwhelmed by the array of choices on the ground floor. There were so many stalls to choose from and all looked the same. We finally settled on one but communication was a problem. You choose the seafood and the style you want it cooked, and someone will bring it upstairs for you. I guess each stall holder is affiliated with a cooked stall upstairs, so you don't have to worry about being overwhelmed a second time by the choices you have.

    Interesting experience
This is an interesting, if smelly, experience. The indoor fish market is huge and teeming with sea life, including huge crabs, octopus and more. As you would expect, the smell is pungent, but it is still worth a visit. You can purchase fresh fish and take it upstairs to be cooked for you. The outside area offers great views of the fishing shops and skyscrapers beyond. The market is free to enter. Worth a visit.

Giant seafood and fish market near the waterfront
Really wide variety of fresh cut and live seafood here - many of the same items but there are hundreds of stalls all around. A few small street eateries around the area. The displays of the fish are the most interesting we felt.

    A different experience
We popped to see this fish market as people kept telling us about it and at one pont in our touring about we happened to be in the right local area to stop by. Its only a short wondering through the fish market visit so you dont really need anymore than 3 minutes but it is worth seeing as its very different to a UK fish market. Manly because all of the fish and other aquatic animals are all alive and swimming about waiting for their fate. Its potentially disturbing in that regard but also amazing to see the various fish and squid and so forth that is available in the Korean territory. Definitely worth a brief stop I think

    Fresh, tasty but pricey
The main restaurant facing the sea was closed and we went to the smaller market next door. Menu was in picture with pricing based on size. Ordered almost all for 6 pax and food was cooked in front of us and was really fresh esp fish, octopus, shell fish, etc. Ordered fresh oysters which were large, sashimi abalone which was hard but crunchy and sashimi yellowtail fish. Very pricey at 420,000 won.

Jagalchi Market is definitely one of the places that I will drop by whenever I am in Busan because this is the place where I can really get my fresh seafood fix!! Although to be honest this is kinda a tourist spot which means that the prices are more to the mid-higher end, but the experience you get is totally different from what you are paying.

How the concept here works is that you will first head down to the ground floor to pick your seafood, which comes the challenging part because there are just so many stall owners around and it was really hard for us to decide who to go for. SO eventually we went with the one that could speak Mandarin.

Basically the staff recommended a few seafood for us: Abalone, Fish, prawns. The good thing about him was that he was not pushy at all and he was pretty honest. So we were quite thick skinned to ask if he could throw in some small prawns which he did which was good.

So there are processing fees (to cook) the dishes, and the fish was cooked three ways.

1) Sashimi
2) Fish soup was made using the bones
3) BBQ fish

Prawns was BBQed anf the Abalone was eaten like a sashimi

Everything was really tasty and it was a good experience after all!

This market is probably the most prominent attraction of Busan. Very similar to Seoul's Noryangjin market in size & varieties.

We have been here 2 years back & also at Noryangjin before. But it never fails to amaze us to see tons & tons of so many different live sea creatures on sale at these markets.

And alot of them are huge, really huge - the Alaskan King crabs, huge octopus & different fishes, various shell creatures, oysters, etc, etc.

Makes one wonder how much sea creatures are disappearing from the ocean daily. And this is just one market!

The vendors are very pushy all vying for your business, as you explore the stalls.

Coming here & not trying the seafood esp the Alaskan King crabs will be a wasted experience.

Only very few places in the world can you get such huge array of huge fresh live seafood at "reasonable prices" ( though not exacty cheap but still cheaper than in most countries). Try eating these in nearby Japan!

All the vendors tied up with some restaurants upstairs who will cook it for you for a fee.

We had a chance to see tanks after tanks filled with exotic but edible sea creatures! Mine! They were gigantic. The ‘spider’ crabs were huge. There were so many different species of everything...clams, prawns, fishes, crabs, eels & etc.

The wet market is pretty organized. Most of all, it was clean and it didn’t smell badly. Even the youngest kid in our group wouldn’t mind going through the alleys to view the amazing assortment of live fishes.

Some of the vendors speak Mandarin! We were happy to converse with them. We didn’t buy anything alive. Instead, we went to the restaurant opposite the market for lunch. The seafood soup & all the seafood dishes were so fresh. Fortunately we had a guide to speak to them, our order was accurate:)) On a separate day, we returned to the same place on our own for a good dinner. We pointed at the menu & pictures hung on the walls. No mistakes made! Great food with yummy rice and at a reasonable price!

We will surely return to this market place for a good seafood meal if we visit Busan in the future.

I would not recommend you eat here. You can come in to walk around and look, but I highly recommend that you do not purchase and eat here.

My husband and I didn’t know better so we went to the first floor to purchase some seafood. It is confusing, you don’t know the prices beforehand, and it is very difficult to communicate. We bought two very small fish and some other shellfish for 220,000 won. (First, they try to give us one big fish and some shellfish for 330,000 won!)

Then they take you upstairs where you will have the seafood cooked to your liking. The sashimi was tough and not good at all. They will bring out some sides to the table. Prices on July 2024: They charged 10,000 won to steam like 7 shellfish, 5,000 won for some side dishes, 1,000 won per rice bowl, and 10,000 for the fish soup (on the menu, it said the price of the soup was 7,000 with two people but we were charged 10,000)!

This ended up being a very expensive meal for two people. Side dishes were not particularly good and the soup was just msg and the fish parts from the sashimi. I also question the cleanliness of the place.

Overall, a COMPLETE tourist trap. It’s a big mess and you will leave confused and feeling like you just got had.

There’s so many better places to eat in Busan. Do not fall for this place. Learn from my mistake!! It was a complete waste of money in my opinion.

The Jagalchi Fish Market - 부산 자갈치시장 is by far a better market than the one in Seoul. Obviously is a market located at the sea unlike the Seoul fish market and it is expected to have fresh catch daily. Indeed we found live, Dead, Frozen, Fresh, Live and dried fish of every kind and size, treated in a hundred ways.

The problem as usual is the hygiene of South Korean vendors. regardless of the rules and regulations you can see that they are not enforced accordingly. The market smells bad and most of the fish are cramped in small aquariums where oxygenation is not proper and humane.

Nonetheless you can find here lots of interesting curiosities and fish species one usually will not see dead or alive in Europe or the U.S.

Lots of algae and Kelp fresh, powdered, dried and in by products.

We recommend the market for a visit, but careful with the restaurants. We entered one and regardless of the freshness of the product the fish was hideous and disgusting. Like we say in Italy...they managed to kill that fish twice. Shame.

For us this place is average. Not like in Melbourne or Tokyo where you actually become hungry just by smelling and seeing the product. Here is unappealing and stinky.

We walked around the market and it is quite nice...anyways,if you go to the restaurant upstairs I recommend to go with local friends. Our lunch was 70$ for pancake where they did forget about the seafood and the worst "sashimi" I have seen ever. We tried to complain and did not eat it, but still had to pay.

The market is a very interesting local experience. Live fresh fish in all the stalls, this is a traditional market that is in all Asian towns. Blocks and blocks of aisles if vendors and fish. Inside the building must vendors will cook fresh seafood for you. We chose fresh scallops from The vendor Lucky. He and his mother in law run there little market. We had 8 scallops bbq for 30,000 won plus a beer and a coke. It was wonderful best scallops I’ve ever had

Lots of hidden charges. Very opaque pricing. Disappointing. Would not recommend. We bought fish from the downstairs market and were told a 5000 charge per person would apply to eat upstairs. We did not order anything extra but on leaving we were charged double what we were told.
