In June 1965, the cornerstone was laid for what would become The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza. Marketed at the time as a "Design for the Future," the Plaza exists today as an icon of 20th century Modernist architecture. The Empire State Plaza features 10 state government buildings set on a six-story platform connected by a quarter mile long underground concourse. The Empire State Plaza is complete with historical attractions, walking tours, modern paintings and sculptures, memorials and remembrances, a performing arts center, 42 story observation deck, ice skating rink during the winter and plenty of music and other entertainment in the summer and fall.

On the Sat following a one to two foot snowstorm the Plaza was almost empty. Four or five families were taking it in and taking pictures. I was very impressed with the design of the Plaza, its uniform towers and the "Egg" being so unique. Albany is a unique Capitol with the Grand Castle like Capitol building and so many... More

Futuristic and aesthetically pleasing, the Plaza is a wonderful resource. It is in fact one of a very few things the city of Albany has going for it. It adjacent to the capital as well as the NYS museum. There are severl modern art pieces that are wonderful and the foreign war memorials should not be missed. There are food... More

I was a teenager when what we then called "The South Mall" was being built. Many of us didn't realize until much later how disruptive this development was to the neighborhood that it crushed (there is an excellent documentary on it), and then when it was completed it looked so outlandish that many were dismayed and outraged (see The Shock... The Mall in and of itself is not really a destination. In winter there is ice skating, so come for that if you like. In summer concerts one or two evenings a week plus the July 4 fireworks show. The ESP (Empire State Plaza) has a variety of restaurants one floor below surface, restrooms, places to sit, outlets to recharge... More

I never thought it can be that stunning people by the way we build the government building. It is absolutely beautiful and iconic than what I have ever seen. Nice place, nice design.

The Rockefeller art collection belongs to the citizens of the state of New York. This is a stunning collection of about 80 pieces of mid-20th century modernist art. The artworks can be seen in the concourse (below ground), the plaza level, and in the State Museum. Some information on the artwork can be found at the gift shops and museum's... More
