Built in 1848-1852, this beautiful red brick cathedral is the hone of the Albany Diocese. 2 ornate spires rise 210 feet tall. 2nd oldest Catholic cathedral in New York State and 3rd oldest Catholic cathedral in the US. Beautiful interior with stained glass windows imported from England.

I love visiting Catholic diocesan cathedrals everywhere I travel. And since I was visiting relatives nearby, i decided to check this out, and attended 12:15pm Mass that day. The cathedral is absolutely beautiful. I am so pleased that I got to check out this church.

Gorgeous cathedral in the capital of New York. I’m obsessed with cathedrals, and I knew I needed to visit this gem. I’m so glad I made the time to, because it did not disappoint!

When we arrived at the cathedral we thought it looked closed but on going round the front the door was open. It was empty so we had it to ourselves. It is a beautiful, spiritual place. The stations of the cross are expertly carved. The whole building has an impressive feel.

I had a day in Albany unexpectedly, so I took Uber downtown from my hotel, and really enjoyed walking around experiencing this very cool historic city. The Cathedral was the capstone of my visit, such a pretty and serene church! I really enjoyed taking photos of the statues and beautiful ceilings, highlighted by the ornate stained glass. A very special prayerful experience! Highly recommended!

We did a self-guided tour of the cathedral on Saturday, May 25, 2019. The interior of the church is very striking and the height of the vaulted ceilings reminds us of the European cathedrals (Koln, Cologne, Strausbourg) that we have visited in the past. The carvings that serve as capitals for the columns are very detailed. During the time we were inside the church, a local family was celebrating a baptism. The outside of the church is beginning to show wearing away of its brown stone walls. Some of the exterior is draped in protective cloth to prevent pieces of the blocks from breaking away.

Not the most imposing of "cathedrals" that I have seen, but nonetheless it is truly beautiful. The most striking element of this church is the magnificent stations of the cross. The most beautiful that I have ever seen.

We popped into the Cathedral one day before taking in an exhibit at the NYS Museum and were surprised at the beauty and grandeur of the Cathedral--akin to anything we've ever seen in Europe
