Typical port sharks. Stand your ground and be smart.
Took a private fastboat from Gili T to Bangsal port to avoid the hassle with the public boat. They parked the boat against 2 other boats so we had to jump across. Without saying anything, 4 guys took our light suitcases and walked over to the collection point. They all had wheels and are very light but they still carried them over their shoulders. I was running low on cash so i just gave one of the guys around 50k, which he didnt want. He wanted a 100k for all 4 guys. Didnt look like any ATMs around so dug into my bag and found another 40k. Said thats all I had, so they took it. Was called in by a guy to sit in the back office where he was trying to "interrogate" me about my stay in Lombok. I looked around, this guy isnt a govt official of any capacity so I kept my answers light. All he was trying to do was find a way to squeeze more money from me, so he offered a taxi ride back from my Senggigi hotel to port for 300k, slyly writing down that number on a piece of paper. I said I had no cash. He replied by saying I can pay half now, half later. I stared at him and said no money. He "released" me from interrogation LOL then went in my taxi to Senggigi. I asked the driver if he wants to pick me up and bring me back to the port in a few days, he said sure. I asked him how much je wants. He said he's happy with only 150k. Got his number for the way back.

    Worst port experience ever!
I wish I could select zero stars. If you stop at Bangsal port then prepare yourself metally before you get off the boat. The touts are at the door and do not take no far an answer. We had a guy try to stand in front of us to grab our bags before we could get them. We told him MANY times we did not need any help. We were able to grab our own bags. He followed us the whole way down the jetty to the port, we were constantly telling him we don't want help. We walked out of the port to a convenience store, he waited outside and followed us again when we came out. We walked into the port again to try to find the public ferry, he still followed us. In the end it was too stressful and we booked a hotel in Lombok for a couple of days and walked far away from the port to get a ride (we paid 150k to get to Mataram) This is the worst port experience we have ever had. We will go back again to look for the public ferry but we are not looking forward to it at all.

Hectic Experience- keep your wits about you!
Found this place a bit annoying - lots of people trying to "help" carry bags when getting off the public boat from the Gilis, then demanding payment (50,000 IDR) for walking 30 metres up the beach. I get that people need to make a living but this is not the best way to go about it! Many of the other tourists were intimidated and a bit confused. There's also heaps of touts trying to sell tours or transport. It's ok, but you have to have your wits about you.

Just be prepared, no need to be anxious
I was so anxious about getting here because of the reviews and comments of Bangsal Port. It's actually not as bad as many of the reviews. Just as long as you are prepared and not a gullible tourist. I rode the scooter here from Senggigi along the coastal road which was very pleasant. There are many establishments where you can park your scooter overnight. I parked at Kayama Parkir which is just facing the ticketing booth of the port. The fee is only idr10k per night. They have security guard there. You are required to not steering lock your bike so they and move it a little bit. And you can leave your helmets with the bike. Tickets to gili Trawangan were idr23k for the public ferry. The private boats are much more expensive and they are very crowded. These public boats were not very crowded even on a weekend. Only thing is with the public boats, you need to be ready to get your feet wet. The private boats board from the jeti. The trip to gili Trawangan is about 15-20mins. When you purchase the tickets, you will receive red, yellow or white ticket. They will announce which color ticket passenger is allowed for boarding. There is a public toilet there. When you arrive gili Trawangan, you might want to consider pony rides to the hotel if you have heavy baggages because it can be a bit far to walk even though it seems like a very small island.

Beware the port boys when arriving at Bangsal Boat terminal. If you let them they'll surround you upon arrival and take 1 bag each for purpose to bill you for handling. Chances are high that you will lose track of your luggage when spread between many handlers.

Better to have your car/taxi pull up short of the harbour and walk the final 50m to the ticket offices.

Beware of brokers that approach you to facilitate ticket sales and proceed direct to the ticket building instead to avoid problems.

This place is definitely crazy but sounds like it has improved post Covid. We arrived from Gili T and were hassled a bit by the locals. We picked up our bags (try to not let them carry them although they will try). We confidently walked off the pier and said we wanted to go to Senggigi. They tried to get us to go to the office and book a return taxi but we firmly said no. We said we just wanted to go one way to Senggigi and agreed to pay £200k for 2 people. At the time we thought this was maybe too much money but when we ordered a Grab back to the ferry from Senggigi it was £190k, so seemed a reasonable price. Remember that prices have significantly increased because of Covid & fuel etc, so expect previous posts to be outdated. Of course, try to haggle more but remember your safety should be a top priority. We had a nice ride to Senggigi with no problems. We did not have any trouble on the way back. Go to the main ticket office to book your tickets. It’s the big white building on the right as you enter (picture attached). Ask for a sticker to put on your T-shirt and any scouts will leave you alone as they know you already have a ticket. The harbour can definitely be intimidating, but remain calm and polite and it will be fine. We used the fast boat both times but there are plenty of local boats. We saw many leaving with lots of extra people onboard, so just be careful.

If Lombok is serious about tourism then it MUST do something about this port (which is one of the main ferry ports on Lombok). It is unfriendly, aggressive and disorganised. (An example of aggressiveness was my partner and I walking onto the pier, where we were slowly approached by four local men, one saying in an aggresive/passive way that he needed because he had none, etc, etc, clearly trying to intimidate us into giving money - unfortunately for them, I'm not one who responds well to veiled threats.) Lombok locals are generally not the friendliest people, to say the least (which in itself will stop me from going back, despite the great resorts), but this place is the worst on the island. We only used this port (having previously read such bad reviews of it) as our intended ferry travel from another nearby port was not possible this time of year. If at all possible, simply stay away from this port (and if you do have to use it, go straight to the end of the long pier away from the locals, and wait there). It's no wonder Lombok struggles to grow it's tourismn industry (it's certainly not Bali).

I just thought I would post this up on here for anyone else wanting some guidance or advice on how to get from Bangsal to Gili Islands. More particularly my experience of the public ‘slow’ boat to Gili T today 20 July 2018 which is not slow took 25 minutes and cost 22,500 IDR per person. More because we were tourists but it’s cheaper for Indonesians. Only buy them from the ladies ticket office. Don’t talk to anyone else as even acknowledging them with yes we are going to gili will cost you money. (I wish I was kidding - a young teen was in front of the official desk trying to get a cut off the price from the official ticket office by him telling the ladies you want a ticket your ticket price may increase by 5k for his ‘help’. Didn’t happen to me but More on this later.

I had read all the reviews and forums answers and was already dreading it but it was absolutely fine. Although I recommend you do some reading to know of what can happen. Just be careful and be very aware of your belongings.

I did this journey with my boyfriend (both British and backpacking SE ASIA in our 20s).

We got a grab taxi from our hotel in Senggigi to Bangsal and it dropped us off directly outside the public ticket office - cost 80k. Please note grab drivers will not want to pick you up by a main road - stay in your hotel lobby if you can as apparently grab isn’t allowed to operate in the area. It’s cheaper than local taxis tho and we have always felt safer in a grab. We left at 11:45 and 45 mins later arrived at the ticket office.

Bangsal is the closest crossing to Gili Islands as far as I’m aware.

We were lucky as our driver didn’t have to pay anything to get into the port compound and we had read that the walk was quite far from the barriers. The barriers were up and no problem. If the barriers are down and your bags aren’t heavy I’d walk but if it looks very busy with touts and horses and carts I would consider paying the car park entrance fee to avoid as much hassle as possible.

The ticket office is right down the end of the road directly by the pier on the left as you come in from the road. It doesn’t look obvious or official, we thought it was wrong but just go in and you will see a seating area and the ticket office booth on your left.

There 2 BOAT OPTIONS

1) PUBLIC ‘SLOW’ BOAT
Cheapest option.
you wait until they have sold 40 people tickets but this doesn’t take long, I was number 8 and took 20 mins till we were told the boat was ready to leave. Takes 25mins direct to Gili T. 22,500 IDR per person inclusive of tax.
We did this and didn’t regret it at all!
YES there are lifejackets.
Smooth crossing and I didn’t feel sick once which is a miracle given I usually throw up on boat crossings!

2) PUBLIC ‘FAST’ BOAT
Costs 85,000 IDR per person (unsure if they add tax as well on top but likely) and they go every hour to gili T at 20 past the hour. Not sure what time for the other islands. We were going to do this but so glad we didn’t as the ‘slow boat’ actually got us there before the fast boat at 1/4 of the cost!

We arrived at the Bangsal Public ticket office at 12:30 the guy in front of the desk wanted us to get a fast boat which left at 1:20. Please ignore him politely as he will add a fee onto the ticket price and tell the ladies you want a ticket and he will ask for the ticket money which will be inflated for his ‘assistance’. We asked the ladies behind the desk who are helpful and polite for 2 tickets on the public slow boat. Bought tickets sat down and waited until we were called 25 mins later to board the boat at 13:00. Departed at 13:05 arrived at Gili T at 13:30 and got straight off. No problem and no hassle! And to our delight before the ‘fast’ boat!!!

Any questions feel free to DM me!

Hope this helps

I read a lot about Bangsal before heading there, so thought I’d recount my experiences. I’d arrived with the expectation that the harbour would be a hellish place, crawling with touts. In the end I only got approached a couple of times, and both half-heartedly. Perhaps the reviews on this thread have encouraged the more persistent ones to move on, or else it was a quiet time of the year. My findings were generally the same as the Finnish guy who posted on 10th Jan.

For those heading there, here’s a step-by-step account of getting from Lombok Airport to Gili Trawangan via Bangsal Harbour: 1) Left Lombok airport in an airport taxi. In reality this was much more hassle than Bangsal itself – there’s no discernible taxi rank, though there are a few kiosks immediately after exiting the airport which reportedly are official. We negotiated with a guy out front who appeared to have an airport taxi. He charged us 250K to Bangsal, which seemed to be a fair price. It takes about 1 hr 30 mins. 2) On arrival at Bangsal, airport taxis can’t get all the way to the harbour. There is a barrier about 300m from the harbour itself, where you get dropped off in what looked like a coach park. There are a number of guys with pony carts hanging around. We ignored these and walked to the port, which took about 10 minutes. 3) The port is straight down the road from the barrier. At the bottom of the road there’s a long pier and, to your left, a dusty parking area. Beyond the parking area is a large white, single storey building with – I think – a blue tin roof. 4) Go in the front door facing the parking area. Immediately to the left there are 3 ladies behind a desk selling public boat tickets. We paid 21K per ticket, one way. The tickets appear to be colour coded to a particular boat departure. 5) The boat itself leaves from the beach adjacent to the building. There are guys standing around directing people to boats. You hang around until a guy starts shouting the destination of a particular boat, at which point everyone with that coloured ticket piles onto the boat. The boats depart when full (about 35 people). I saw other reviews mentioning overcrowding; ours was full but not overloaded. Getting heavy luggage on board is difficult. Mind your head on the roof. You’ll get your feet wet when embarking. 6) The crossing takes about 30 minutes and is pretty choppy. There was also a lot of flotsam, so they had to keep stopping the boat to avoid it. Disembarkation is again at a beach with big rainbow coloured letters spelling out Gili Trewangan. Here there is another official ticket office for the return leg.

On the return leg: 1) Purchased tickets from the official ticket office (this time 15k, not sure why it was cheaper). 2) On disembarking at Bangsal, walked back up the road to the barrier. We were bothered by a few guys asking where we were walking to, but nothing major. 3) Just beyond the barrier we came across a number of Bluebird taxis gathered together. This time the guy wanted to use the meter, which we were suspicious of as it seemed to be ticking over rather quickly. In the end though it cost 315k back to Lombok airport, so slightly more than the outbound leg. Some friends of ours took a private boat which cost 750k, which I wouldn’t necessarily recommend unless you’ve got a timetable to keep
