If you're planning a trip to Gili Islands please reconsider. And don't make a same mistake as we did by going there. Marine weather between Bali and Gili Islands is unpredictable!
Fast boats connectiones may have breaks from 1 day to even a week. And this is info you don't find from anywhere!

So even in emergency situationes you MAY NOT GET OUT of the islands! Fast boat companies doesn't take responsibility about the refunds EVEN you had paid ticket with high price in advance. Gilis and Lombok (especially Lembar harbour) are highly corrupted. Locals may help you out of the islands if you're willing to pay enough.

We got out with 11 hours journey through Lombok. There were hundreds tourists waiting to get out of the islands. During our trip locals were intentionally creating caos and not telling any information to get tourist to pay more to get into ferry in Lembar harbour. And this happened in optional route we got as a "refund" from Gili Gili fast boat ticket. In harbour we were still forced to pay to get into ferry which was nasty!

We also saw videos of fast boats in terrific waves people womiting and fainting inside. We also heard some boat had sank and tourists were saved to safety ferries. Many people were missing their flights.

So please for your own sake, reconsider your travel destination, there are better and safer optiones to make a good holiday than Gili Islands!

Filthy places, polution evident on the beach. You can see in the water, polution that looks like a white frothy spit, disqusting . All sort of rubbish everywhere and rather unhappy people compared to Bali. We visited all three Gilis and stayed 3-4 nights in each one of them. Will not come back.

Gili Air- Nothing near the “paradise” these islands are advertised to be.
The villages are slums and extremely sad and depressing to see how the locals live. Both my partner and I felt unsafe. The smell of garbage/ waste/ human waste is disgusting. You can only ride bikes which is almost impossible in some parts of the island due to there being no paths and only sand. Do NOT take the “horse carts” they are small malnourished abused ponies, who work all morning and night, are whipped and forced to carry heavy carts of cement and 4+ people with luggage.
The beaches are all dead sharp coral and you can barely swim at high or low tide. The snorkelling is horrible and all of the reef is dead and brown.
The food is terrible, none of the cafes an restaurants have any idea of general hygiene. We cut our trip short within an hour of arriving.
The best part of Gili Air was when we got on the return boat to leave. NEVER again

The Gili islands are beautiful. Lots of amazing things to do. But all of it gets completely ruined by the inept and remarkably stupid non existent system at both ports. I’ve been all over the world and this is by far the worst experience. All the while the ports charge fees to leave and enter. Why? None of the funds are used to improve a single thing. For years it’s remained a terrible and idiotic experience with crowds and no system whatsoever. It makes me angry that you pay taxes for nothing. An entire scam. There are no excuses for it. Just greed. Anyone who has been will know. I’m now totally turned off especially when there are more amazing places to go in SE Asia without this level of garbage to deal with. Never again

The Gilis are 3 islands separated by deep Chanel’s between providing amazing scuba diving. Water temperature 29 c even at 40 metres. Each island is different. Gili Trawangan the party island. Gili Meno the honeymoon island and Gili Air the quiet island. All have bars, restaurants and live music but each lives up to its title. No cars/scooter, no dogs only bicycles and horse cart taxis. Heaps of different things to days and everyone I speak to say they wish they had allowed more time to stay there ( most people stay 3 days on average). Easily accessible from Lombok on a public boat from Bangsal harbour ($2 aus and 20 minutes travel) and Bali by fastboat from Padang Bai ($40 aus ) one hour up the coast from Denpasar by private driver ( $30 aus ).

My husband had been wanting to visit the islands for years, we were very dismayed by the lackluster “paradise” of these islands. We visited gili T and gili air. It was very eerie, especially at night because it was a ghost town, which I’m sure had in part to do from the earthquakes a couple of years ago. The beaches are polluted and covered in coral so you will need to bring water shoes to wear at all times. We stayed at a couple of places which were supposed to be higher end, however they were worn done and out dated. Please do not take the horse cidomo carriages on any of these islands. They are actually ponies and are forced to carry a wagon filled with 4+ people and large luggage’s. I have seen first hand the abuse and neglect that these poor horses receive. My stomach would drop whenever I would hear the bells signaling that they were working, which was all day long. You couldn’t get away from seeing or hearing these poor animals wherever you were on this island. Not only did it ruin our vacation seeing that these poor animals are overworked 18+ hours a day in sweltering heat, but 8 months later I am still traumatized for them. They are malnourished, fed salt water, have open wounds from their ill fitting harnesses, forced to pull a heavy wagon down sand paths and are extremely overworked. If everyone refuses to take the horse carriages, they will be forced to use solar powered tuktuk’s.

Three great islands with friendly people and all the facilities you could need. No cars, no dogs and no noisy scooters (electric only). And more eateries than you can imagine. Crystal clear water that you are very unlucky if you don’t see a turtle when snorkeling. Scuba diving is a must do here. No sharks or bities in these waters and unbelievably clear water ($90 Aus) to do your first dive. Gili Trawangan the party island, Gili Meno the honeymoon island and Gili Air the quiet island. All have 24 hour medical clinics some have four or five clinics.

my husband and I took a private tour, about $135 Aussie dollars, which isn't much for a day which included boat, driver, guide and underwater guide, we could choose to stay or move onto any of the islands as we chose rather than waiting for other travellers. We went to Gili trawangan first and got upclose and personal to many Large Sea Turtles, then we went to Gili Meno and our guide took some bread in a water bottle to feed out and attract reef fish, wow amazing, then we moved onto the Gili Meno statues, very interesting, a little busy with tourist floating around, but ok, the last island was Gili Air, relaxing and a nice spot to grab some lunch and have a walk around. all in all a great day trip

Spent a whole day snorkeling around the Gili Islands, Gili Air is the best but all worth a look. We had several turtles swim under us, one quite large with literally thousands of fish and 1 sea snake, which was more scared of us... definately worth at least one day trip.
