This was a grand and important historical palace. Only a tiny part is open to the public, and that area is full of sellers of trinkets

A lot of historical information about the rulers of Medan including their contribution towards the development of Medan. The palace is well maintained. The Meriam Puntung is also inside the same compound. The Maimun Palace provides internal guide who will explain the various artifacts and information about the royal family.

Never have I seen a Palace in such pitiful condition. While crossing the road to the Palace, I was mugged, which shows the poor security in the area.
After making a report to the police, I returned to the Palace determined to visit it.
The grounds were very poorly maintained. When you enter the main hall on 2nd floor you are charged Rp 10.000 (60 us cents) but what you see is the front hall only. That also the hall is filled with a souvenir shop and a photo studio and a traditional costume rental. Heaven can only answer why wouldn't they put all that outside the Palace instead of inside? It totally destroys the entire grandeur of the place.

The most disappointing part is rest of the Palace is closed as its occupied by relatives of the Royal family. But don't expect to see family living in royal. It was more like a squatter, with ill kept rooms.

Even the toilet is ill kept and they charge you a fee. And in the grounds you will find small unclean eateries.

In Yogya, the Royal Palace is surrounded by houses belonging to the abdi or Palace custodians, but even their houses are much well maintained.

Maimoon Palace is just one big hall with squatters around it.

I'm really proud of Maimun Palace. It's an icon to Medan. The palace itself is really beautiful with its bright yellow ornaments. The palace has a mix of european and arabian architeture. I love the exterior as much as I love the interior. With IDR 10.000 or less than USD 1, you can feel the royal atmosphere. They rent out malay traditional outfit inside the palace. I don't really like the idea of having stores inside the palace. But yeah, you can try it and take some pictures as prince or princess. Last but not least, we need more gallery to read about the history of Sultan, the kingdom and the legends. There's not much to read.
