The monument itself is very attractive. You can see the 2 giants from the water are fighting to each other. This is the legend of Surabaya and how the name of Surabaya is formed. You have to be careful when taking photos as the place is very crowded and it is at the roadside. There is limited parking lots so suggest to take grab and let the driver wait at the roadside for a quick while. You will also found there so many photographers that is volunteer to help taking photos and what you need to do is to pay them for the photos you want each @ Rp10,000. Of course you can take your own photos there. The weather in Surabaya is incredibly hot so you won't be able to stay long under the sun.

Unusual monument depicting a crocodile and shark in a battle for supremacy and is symbolic of Surabaya's strength. The city is names after the Javanese words 'suro' and 'boyo' for shark and crocodile. Main interest of locals seemed to be the skate park adjacent.

The Emblem of Surabaya city.
Fighting shark and crocodile is the emblem of Surabaya city, located near the entrance to Kebun Raya Surabaya (Surabaya city zoo). It's derived from local folk etymology, sura or suro (shark) and baya or boyo (crocodile), they fought each other in order to be an animal king of the land and sea, they both injured in this fight, the shark returned to the sea as ruler of the sea, and the crocodile return to the land as ruler of the land/river. This folk story is unverifiable though very popular.
Regardless of that, Suro and Boyo (Shark and Crocodile) Monument is an unique and interesting place. It's also beautiful, clean, and well organized. The fountain and the garden surround the monument make this place more fresh and green. And because it located near the entrance to Kebun Raya Surabaya (Surabaya city zoo), we can go to the zoo after visiting this place.

This monument is the landmark of Surabaya. The name of Surabaya was taken from the story of this monument. Sura means a shark and baya means a crocodile. The two animals were fighting to rule this area until they both died. So, people use their name as the name of this city, Surabaya.

Surabaya is an ancient city, with one mosque dating back half a millenium. It also has one of the most remarkable collections of colonial architecture in South East Asia, most of it completely neglected and time-worn. The historic buff will find much to entertain them in this overlooked city. It is nothing but a disgrace then that this ugly, kitschy monument set in front of the zoo for kids is more highly rated than dozens of historic gems. Honestly, turn left and right in front of this dubious statue and you will see half a dozen more architecturally impressive buildings.

Surabaya got its name from a local folklore which tells of the vicious battle between Sura (white shark) and Baya (a crocodile) for the supremacy of the animal kingdom. This beautiful monument depicts this battle.
The garden encompassing this monument is very beautiful with its flowers and plants.
