At first, I was somewhat 'ho hum' when I saw the bridge but quickly became interested when our driver mentioned that there has been a bridge in this location since 1743 when built by the Dutch. The timber guardrails were removed in 1890 and replaced by iron rails. The bridge provided a link over the river that allowed Europeans on the West side to interact with the Chinese, Arabs and Javanese on the East side. It continues to be painted red as a link with the colonial past.

This is a historic bridge, dating back to colonial times and the independence war...however there's nothing to see here really, just a busy and dirty and hot area (mostly wholesale shops)

Surabaya historical landmark is a bridge named Red, Jembatan Merah. Just an ordinary old bridge with red painted railings for tourists who visited there, but to me, a native of Surabaya, once was my life. Spanning north south across the main waterway of turbid Golden River, mark the Central Business District since the colonial days in the 18th century, until the present. At the south end of the bridge is the Chinatown where I grew up, and cross the bridge in the north was our family business which raised me up. A painting by laureate painter Joni Ramlan of Mojosari, East Java, has dedicated the memory of my early life on impressionistic oil on canvas.

Impressed by the story behind the Red Bridge, we set out to look for it. It was a great disappointment! Just a small river with the railings on both sides of the road painted in red! No story, no small monument, very obscure. Give it a miss!

Red Bridge is founded on an agreement Pakubowono II of Mataram with VOC since Nov. 11 1743. In the agreement stated that some areas of the north coast, including Surabaya, submitted to the Company, including Surabaya, which was under Dutch colonialism.
Since then, the Red Bridge area into a commercial area and be the only one that connects Surabaya Kalimas and Residency Building. In other words, Red Bridge is a very important facilitator in that era.
Red Bridge berubaha physically around the 1890s, when the guardrail was changed from wood to iron. Currently, the condition of the bridge connecting the Eagles and Fireworks Jepun on the north side of Surabaya is almost the same as the other bridges, with a certain red color.
In the vicinity of the bridge, there are several other Dutch heritage buildings that still functioned and is located south of Red Bridge. In addition, there is also the famous shopping center in Surabaya ie, Red Bridge Plaza.
Red Bridge was once a living witness of the Indonesian army, especially Surabaya heroes who fought against the Dutch colonialism. Therefore, no matter the conditions that may occur today, Red Bridge is an important legacy for the history of Indonesia. Red Bridge is the hero who is still alive and will continue to live against time.

Step over the bridge and wander into china town if you go straight or take a left to go into the arab quarters. Very hot to walk around, but very picturesque and so many kodak moments.

My wife and I took a taxi ride to see the Jembatan Merah (Red Bridge) during our holiday in Surabaya. We knew that it was just a bridge, but our desire to be on the bridge was to relive a major historical event that took place at the bridge in November 1945. The Battle of Surabaya was fought here at this bridge between the pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and the British and Indian troops. It was this great battle at the Jembatan Merah that became the symbol of Indonesian resistance which in due course galvanised international support for the independence of Indonesia.
Also Jembatan Merah inspired Gesang, a renown Indonesian composer, to compose a song by the same name, Jembatan Merah. This song became an evergreen, played by many orchestras and sung by numerous singers to this day. In this song Gesang said it was at Jembatan Merah his lover left him and never to return. He was deeply heart broken and resolved to wait at this bridge till she returned. I love this beautiful Jembatan Merah song very much.
One TripAdvisor commentator said that Jembatan Merah is just a bridge that will bring you to the other side of the river. We visited Jembatan Merah not just to see the bridge, but to experience a nostalgic journey into history and to relate to Gesang’s musical composition.

The Red Bridge divides kalimas and Residency Building Surabaya. It is the old commercial area. In 1743 a deal was done between Pakubowono II of Mataram with the VOC where certain areas in surabaya came under Dutch colonisation. It was the surabaya soliders that fought the dutch against colonisation. So it is an important lagacy for the people of surabaya.
it is only a small bridge and it is coloured in red but it is because of the legacy that is why this bridge is important to the people here even though it is just a small bridge.
