Beautiful church dating to 1899, built in the Gothic Revival architecture style and the oldest Catholic church in the city. Inaugurated in 1900 and destroyed during the War of Independence, it was largely restored during 1949/50 and again in 1960 and 1996, resulting in the building closely resembling the initial structure. The towers on either side above the entrance rise to a height of 15m, conservative by church standards. Excellent information signage in the grounds outlining the history of the Church. Simple interior highlighted by the stained-glass windows and the sanctuary. There is vis a grotto to the Virgin and a feature wall showcasing the Stations of the Cross.

Well, I've been in this church since my childhood, I got baptized here also. But as far as I know, the name of the church should be: Gereja Katolik Kelahiran Santa Perawan Maria...

Beautifully constructed. As Surabaya have sufficient number of Christian population. So, Surabaya have sufficient number of church. But this is the best church.

They were kind enough to let me in 2 days before christmas, especially since I am not a Christian. I think politeness and goodwill takes you places as access can be really difficult during this period.
Anyway, it's one of the oldest Cathedral in Surabaya, with mozaic windows and high ceiling (probably renaissance paintings on it). I think it resembles those churches in Italy (obviously it's catholic church). Really beautiful to see.
But I personally think, church is not just about the worship and the prayers. It's the communal and services to their devotees, which I believe stands out. Beside the cathedral, I see conggregation building that supports local youth or other humanitarian efforts. This I believe is the true face of religion, putting forward its faith on humanity.

The name of the church is "Gereja Kelahiran Santa Perawan Maria" or "The Birth of St Mary the Virgin", referring to the doctrine of the Catholic Church that Mary was born immaculate, without original sin. That's why sometimes the church is also called Santa Perawan Maria Tak BerCELA, the Indonesian translation for The Immaculate St Mary the Virgin. (Note: not Tak Berdosa, which translates from / to Without Sin).

This building has been built since the Dutch Colonial era. The building is consider ancient and is protected by Local Government law as a Heritage Building. The building is now a Roman Catholic Church under The Archdiocese of Surabaya. The church name is Kelahiran Santa Perawan Maria (The Birth of Blessed Virgin Mary). You can come to have a Eucharist on Sunday Mass or weekday mass.

I like the architecture, the way the people take care of the church and the hospitality of the people there.

I used to go to this church when I was a kid until I entered high school. I've always love and feel peace when I tended the mass and sing and joined the choir . To me, it is also one of the beautiful "Heritages" of Surabaya, with its ancient style (Gothic?) Building, and beautiful decorations inside the church.
It is one of the Dutch era Catholic Church which is still well maintained and used until now.
