My first time riding the train in Indonesia was from Jogjakarta to Malang, an 8 hour trip that cost me 225,000 rupiahs for a seat in the Executive Train. Seats are not comfortable, foods were lousy and bathroom is very filthy. For my second train ride, from Malang to Surabaya, I purchased the Economy ticket for 40,000 rupiahs. My expectations... The KAI has tremendously improved their quality of service. The train was clean. The food offered in the train (traditional Indonesian food) were a bit pricey, but decent. The train offers a gorgeous rice paddy field scenery, something you can't get when traveling with car, bus or plane. Highly recommended.

Powerful AC, punctual, worth the price, short duration, seat & cleanliness could be better. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Take Sancaka Pagi Train to get to Surabaya and enjoy a pleasant view, this transportation offered. You'll passed mountains including Gn. Lawu, completed with paddy field along the trip. Its a good refreshment for the eyes.

Great train service but the aircon didn't half way and they refunded the ticket to us. Great service recovery from PT KAI

Surabaya Gubeng station is on the southern part of the city. It is large with cafes, bakeries and convenience shop and free wifi. Dunkin donuts and Holland bakery have outlets there. We took the more expensive eksecutive class morning train to Banyuwangi. The journey time is 6.5hrs. The seats are a little shabbier than European Class 2 trains. There is... More
